Sony had a lot going on for them the last few months of 2010. The PlayStation Move was launched, Gran Turismo 5 was finally released, and pretty much, everyone - especially Sony - was expecting that the company would be able to push a whole lot more console units. So, was it as good a time for Sony as people thought it would be?

According to Sony's earnings report for the months of October through December of 2010, that would be a yes. At least in so far as their game division is concerned. See, Sony's overall company profits were recorded to be at a slight downturn at 8.6%, about JPY 72.3 billion (US$ 89 million). Their overall revenues were pegged at JPY 2.206 trillion.

One of the main factors being tagged as the reason for this tiny bit of loss of profit, according to the company, was the slowed down sales of their LCD TVs. Another would also be the loss from their movie division.

Doesn't it seem like unit sales should always fall off several years into a (non-consumable) product's lifecycle, simply by virtue of the fact that you would conceivably reach a saturation point among your target audiences?

That's when you increase your targeted audience (Releasing the balance board/Move/xbox's thing) to try and increase sales again, or increase the accessibility to your product (Apple allowing Best Buy to be a seller, decreasing the cost of a product unit).

The special case is the xbox360 which, almost as if by design, failed on such a regular basis that their sales remain consistent (I would expect- I don't look at the numbers). [Actually, I think Apple also creates an artificial drive for sales by changing hardware designs regularly and marketing 'cool'; but that's a different set of musings).

NOTE: I have never taken an econ or business course, so all of this is speculative.

what the hell is sonys problem, hacking and backups have ben around for years on the xbox360 and the worst thats happened is that microsoft bans consoles from online play, never seen a complaint from them yet, and the xbox is a huge pain to try and hack but the scene keeps on, sonys no different, it takes a little bit of networking knowledge to actually transfer some of these games to the ps3 and most people dont even know what a network is let alone have the ability to cruise the file structure to figure out how to get a game to load, i dont think sony has much to worry about because people are traditionally looking for direct to disc backups of games for the "ease" of use factor but when they hear that you need to FTP a game they look at you like you have 2 heads and easily get put off to the idea of a little "work" sure i pirate im not gonna deny it, thatd be like someone saying theyve never masturbated in their life ever, you know theyre lying. but when it comes down to it, most people with a ps3 will be put off by the work it takes versus going out and dropping 50 bucks on a used copy of a game

Console profits went up because people like me had to buy a new system because of the "Yellow Light Of Death" plague kept coming back before the original PS3s ultimate death. I went through 2 original 60GB PS3s and decided to live half assed with the Slim model. I am very pissed off.
