Next month, Sony's much talked-about Xperia Play smartphone will finally hit the market. Since the Xperia Play -- or PS Phone, if you want -- is one of Sony Ericsson's main weapons in their bid for a bigger slice of the smartphone market, comparisons with Apple's iPhone are inevitable. As Sony Ericsson sees it, one major positive point for the Xperia Play, however, is that using it is "much cooler than using an iPhone."

"The first thing this does it put Sony Ericsson firmly back in the game of smartphones," Sony Ericsson UK marketing manager David Hilton told UK-based newspaper Metro. "It puts our smartphones out there with the latest Android technology, the benefits of that coupled with the best of Sony technology that make using a Sony Ericsson much more satisfying, much more enjoyable and frankly much more cool than using an iPhone."

In addition, Hilton pointed out that not only is it "much more cool" than an iPhone, the Xperia Play will also be competitive in terms of pricing. Sony Ericsson has yet to announce an official price point for the smartphone, but Hilton revealed that it will cost "the same or probably a little bit less" than Apple's wildly popular mobile phone.

With the iPhone out of the picture -- in Sony's eyes, anyway -- there does remain one possible competitor for the Xperia Play. This competition doesn't come from the smartphone arena, however, but from Sony's own handheld video game division. Yep, Sony Ericsson believes the only possible competition for the Xperia Play is Sony's own PlayStation Portable successor, the Next Generation Portable.

Its about time someone gives these poor bastards a better way to game.I always kind of felt bad for them,like the way you feel bad for handicapped person.

Although I dont do smartphones I am curious to see how theyre going to compare the iphone with this and the ngp.Seems to me that apple might have just lost a leg to stand on.

Since pretty much all products say "As cool as the iPad" "Cooler than the iPhone" they obviously think the iDevices are pretty damn good since they have to compare their device to the iDevices.

Xperia play has a price tag of £519.99 on Play.com for an unlocked model which is about $840 USD which is pretty insane price for a single CPU phone, rather wait for a dual CPU phone if i willing to dish out that much for a phone.

After reading all there was to read about Mobile World Congress 2011, I was left having to choose between two devices: The Xperia Play or the Samsung Galaxy S2.
A couple of days ago, I settled on the Galaxy S2 because of it's superior specification (including the mouth-watering screen). However, the more I read/see of the Xperia Play, the more I want one.
I suppose I could go with Samsung and just "settle for" the NGP.

It's just the concept of it. My products are cooler than your products, but you think otherwise, and so on. People are still complaining about two page articles here and there, but I'm complaining about articles that are common fucking sense.
I bet Sony thinks they're cooler at suing than Apple, since Apple failed. That will last until the judge rules against Sony.

xperia play is actually cooler than the iphone when you think about it. there are so many points i can make, but all i have to say is "android", nuff said.

Nothing from Sony is even vaguely cool since the Ps1. The Ps3 started off a joke and then just became affordable, the Psp's barely anything at all and Ps2 was just the biggest platform at the time, and as much as i hate to admit it Apple does make the things people want where Sony is pure technology and nothing more.

Apple is about the style, Sony is about technological superiority. What they have in common is they both focus on superior hardware. Original Xbox 360 failure rate, anyone? I have two dead ones waving at me right now.

The PSP wasn't just a pretty damn good console for its time, it was an experiment. Nintendo pretty much had the enhanced-interactivity/shovelware market pinned down, but Sony found its own niche in the handheld market; better hardware. Because that's there thing. And they found that people were willing to pay.

Obviously it has its flaws... but if you think that it was a failure, ask yourself this; why would Sony build on a failure?

This is nothing to do with success or failure it's about Sony claiming it's "Cool", i mean Ford cars are successfull but would anyone call most of them cool? Just look at the amount of people willing to openly use their Psp compared to those using iTouch etc. and that tells you.

Since I've never felt the need to (and actually feel quite adverse towards) getting calls from my grandma through my gaming device?!
