Sony working on 'future platform related activities'

sce-wwsSony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed that Sony is indeed already working on some new hardware.

“Yes, we are undergoing many activities that we haven’t yet been talking about in public," Yoshida told Develop. "Some future platform related activities.”

Yoshida didn't specify if it's a new portable or a new home console. What Yoshida did explain however was that Sony's next line of PlayStations will be more developer-friendly, thanks to input from SCE president Kaz Hirai.

"When Ken Kutaragi moved on and Kaz Harai became the president of SCE, the first thing Kaz said was, ‘get Worldwide Studios in on hardware development’,” Yoshida said. “So he wanted developers in meetings at the very beginning of concepting new hardware, and he demanded SCE people talk to us [developers].”

This closer collaboration between the hardware and software development teams is also reportedly what helped spawn the PlayStation Move motion controller. "Move is one of those new ways of developing platforms," said Yoshida.

It usually takes 2 years from the first announcement of a next gen console to launch date and with 2012 already rumoured for the next wave of console's it seems about right. Although i do want a PSP2 maybe they'll develop them along side each other.

I doubt it will be a new console... they JUST released Move, so I highly doubt they'll pull another public "FU" and release an updated console like they did with the PSP 3000 and Go (Even though Go ultimately failed anyways). And by "lesson" with the PS3? Umm.... I'm pretty sure the issue was the price tag of $399... not the dev-friendly atmosphere... and look what happene3d! They lowered the pricetag and now there's waaaay more PS3's than a year or two ago! In other words... don't make this new hardware burn a hole in our pockets =.=

And the PS3 and 360 have a long way to go. We're just now seeing amazing looking games like Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 3, Uncharted 2, Final Fantasy 13, and Crysis 2.

Future games probably won't look too much better and there's probably no other game that will look as good as Gran Turismo 5 this generation.

A lot of Sony developers stated that they're only making games in 720p because the difference is only minor and it takes much longer. I think that in order to better the visuals, Sony will start developing all first party games native 1080p. Uncharted 2 was already an amazing game, but I can't help but think of how much better it would have looked in 1080p.

I'm not a graphics whore by any means, just thinking of what they're going to do from a business standpoint. Because remember when the PSP was only 222mhz? They didn't want the developers to come with games that utilized the hardware to the full potential right away because the PSP already looked good and then in the future the games just started looking that much better. Of course I believe they should have left it 333mhz from the beginning because it wouldn't have been so restrictive on developers and they could have did more of what they wanted in the beginning.

In reference to the article: gamers don't care about the PS3 being developer friendly or not. They only care for great games. The companies that actually took the time to learn how to work with the PS3 had amazing results. The PS3 has the most amazing games ever seen and at this stage in its life span it has tons of games already. BTW the new hardware is obviously the PSP2, since PS3 is still a young system.

Every other Sony system is easy to dev for

PS1 - Easy
PS2 - Hard
PSP - Easy
PS3 - Hard
PSP2 - Easy

Problem is, PS4 has to be hard, as it'll be cell based to get backwards compatibility....

PS4 would be cool, but it seems like it'd be too early and the PS3 is just starting to get a lot of good games.

Yeah that's part of technology 101, nothing is future proof ever, in fat new tech starts to get obsolete right as soon as it is released.

There is a chance of it being the PS4, I mean it doesn't take a year to make a console, it'd be a few 3-5 years for it to be made maybe less, and for the PSP2 it might also be that too, maybe integrate PS2 Graphics or better?

I'll go 50%-50%

Great to see they are going to let Developers have a bigger say. Could mean we see some great stuff from Sony in the future.

that's because every psp so far has pretty much the same base hardware arquitecture. If completely new hardware is rolled I doubt it very much it will be called PSP-4000. I even think Sony may try to discontinue using the PSP brand name. To give it a "fresh" reboot.

That would be stupid and a waste of the brand awareness they've already built up all these years.

You're talking as if the PSP is some tainted brand like vista because it didn't out sell pokemon with 12 year olds who constantly need their broken consoles replaced by their parents.

:-?

To the devs at least the PSP brand is tainted by that "piracy stuff" people love to talk about(not that I'll make any opinion about that). lol at Pokemon.

Ah, I see what you mean.

I dont think its tainted with consumers, but yeah I've heard something about devs reluctant to invest in developing for the psp.

But thats still kinda weird since every other console other than ps3 is also cracked.

Hmmm...

I still think that Nintendo will have much more success, Sony have messed up the psp go (its the same as psp 3000 but slide screen and no UMD which is worse...) and the ps3 (super high price).
Now that Nintendo are releasing the 3Ds they will be rulers of the universe!!
Related to this post - psp2 should be better (psp go was mroe like psp 1.5)

depends on what you mean? my personal definition of virtual reality is perfect immersion where your consciousness is linked to a computer or something at the bare minimum a full suit that reads ALL your movements or a helmet that reads your brain waves things along those lines

so i doubt virtual reality will be in homes anytime soon

and even if it does come out there will be people against it saying its an abomination that man and machine have merged to far blah blah while i wish for VR i just know what controversy it will hold ...

i hope they make things like in-game music manditory or make them to where it doesnt matter what a games preferences are. it should work either way. also backwards compatibility with PS3 needs to be there.

I think it would be cool to make a mini laptop format console for the next PSP, with a break out controller with full size analogue sticks, and ability to play PS2 games and games that look nearly as good as PS3 graphics quality. It should cost under £200. It should also have a Net Yaroze type open development platform to welcome homebrew games.
