Sony says no 3D PSP anytime soon, questions Nintendo 3DS announcement |
Listed in: PSP, Nintendo DS Tags: 3ds, John Koller, Nintendo, SCEA

With the Nintendo 3DS announcement generating a lot of buzz today in the interwebs, a lot of people were expecting Sony to fireback with the announcement of their own. Well they didn't, but they have a lot to say with the Big N's surprise revelation. Speaking with IGN, SCEA's Director of Hardware and Marketing John Koller has said that fans should not expect a 3D PSP anytime soon:
Our focus on 3D right now is on the console. There's a tremendous amount of opportunity on PlayStation 3 with 3D. The amount of interest in 3D from the retail side and game publishers is off the charts. We know we have a hit with 3D on PS3 and we're going to concentrate our efforts there.
I think it remains to be seen where Nintendo goes with 3D on a portable. Having been in the portable space for quite awhile, I think it's an interesting move but one I'd like to see where they go from a demographic standpoint. 8 and 9 year olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now.

If it's NOT 8 or 9 years olds, then it's 10 to 12 year olds.

Of course it is PRIMARILY for 8-9 year olds, he is not saying they are the only ones that play it, but that that is the main age bracket that owns a DS/DSi.. etc

it would be the 15-22 that would least likely play the ds, [i would say]
its either for the elderly or the young

Nonetheless, that is who predominantly owns the DS.

I really doubt 3D is going to become widely adopted until they figure out a way to do it without glasses.
As far as I know that hasn't happened yet.

Here CES(report): http://goo.gl/8UGw (this technology out-dates the 2010 CES anyways)
But the only reason I don't see this working too well at all is because of major issues if you simply move your head abit away from the game , your eyes take a few seconds to adjust to the illusion. To use this without glasses on a DS; shit, the thing would have to be rather heavy for a handheld. Nintendo probably advanced the technology a BIT. Nintendo plans for 2011, i don't see things going to well for them.

Funny you ask, because apparently you don't yourself.

"details on how the handheld's 3D support will work are still scarce, although it has been confirmed that 3D glasses won't be required."

I suppose you'd be able to play with 8 controllers too as long as everyone stood in the 8 spots where you can allegedly see it.
I'll believe it when I see it.
(Maybe I'm not standing in the right spot)

Although I'm not sure whether strapping a Wii-mote to your forehead will be much more popular than the glasses.

Can't wait for this new DS. I was considering getting a DSi but I guess now I'll just wait considering it has 100% backwards compatibility.
Just so excited for the types of games they could do with this technology, especially when it comes to something already as perfected as Pokemon, Mario and Metroid. F-Zero on it? I don't think I'd need another racing game as long as I live.
This is why I like Nintendo now compared to the rest. New features in a console? Brilliant! So much better than just upping the storage capacity and graphics.

Can't Nintendo ever come up with an idea of their own? After Sony has been working on doing 3d for awhile now, now Nintendo jumps in to want to do 3d. Sound familiar? When Sony does Six Axis and then announces the motion control and the 360 announces the Natal?
Nintendo does suck as a company, but atleast it's never had a bad handheld. Why? Always gets great third party support.

So don't say anything if you don't know what you are talking about.

Because ever since Sony copied motion sensing with the Six Axis, Nintendo fanboys have been like "Why can't Sony ever come up with their own ideas, etc." Then when Microsoft does it. "Natal is just a motion sensing ripoff."
So yeah. My reply was to turn the entire respone that Nintendo fanboys use time and time again around on Nintendo itself.

Maybe since "unique" was the way to get sales. Who cares if the unique way of playing sucks balls. Nintendo is now trying to be innovative on every single system they have released recently.
Or hey. If you want to hear some more shit about Nintendo. What about the DSi anyways. The DS was already a perfectly good system, but why not release the DSi which adds DLC as DSiWare, SD Cards, able to play music, watch videos, browse the internet, etc. Damn. Because their DS sales started going down why not add everything the PSP already has onto the DS, then add a cheap camera onto it so it has one thing better.
So I'll go back again to what the Nintendo fanboys have been saying. "Can't Nintendo ever come up with an idea of their own."

For kids, it's a great opportunity to take mobile gaming in an active direction. Us adults who like portable gaming and ARG elements fair better (and more maturely) with games like MSG:PO with it's wifi detection mini-game (it also lends itself to dangerous driving if you try to do both at once).
The funny part is this is the same guy who flipped out on me for playing a PSP game (D&D tactics) while at our weekly D&D game. But at least my game was still somehow connected to D&D.
Besides, there is nothing sadder than a grown man cussing a flattened pokeball when he's supposed to be focusing on the game at hand (and the 6 other people waiting for him to take his turn).

Maybe many thin screens layered into a brick to simulate depths?
Just an idea.

But, I don't really care about 3D, so I'm glad Sony says no to it. If they want to sell it later as an accesory, fine. I also don't give a damn about cameras and touchscreens, I prefer to have those in a cellphone. If they're gonna release a PSP2, they should improve the graphics a notch (though I'm very satisfied with my PSP), or make it handle more polygons and better textures (hopefully PS2 emulation XD) and bring more exclusives. They should improve the internet performance, add youtube support and the like (without CFW) and divx or H.264 video support. And for God sake, ADD A 2ND FREAKING NUB. I mean, if I want to play crappy childish games I just might play on an DS emulator rather than buy the actual console.Chinatown Wars doesn't count as exception as it's not an exclusive anymore.
@ Shardnax
I do recognize that MAYBE 20% of what comes out for a Sony platform is good, however, that 20% is far more convincing for me than a 99.9% crapload of shovelware released for the Wii or the DS.
Just some names for you to memorize that can't be played on a Nintendo Console: Resistance, Final Fantasy from VII-XIII (6 my favourite but still playable on Sony consoles), Dissidia, Crisis Core, Kindgdom Hearts 1-2-BBS, GOW, Killzone, Metal Gear Solid, Heavy Rain, LBP, Uncharted... well, I think you were referring to Apple and PSP Go fanboys (regarding demographic), who don't care to spend a lot of money and get screwed in the process.

and for the fanboys of natal -point your fingers at the tv screen in a 45 degree angle and shout "pheww phewwww" if you see an enemy.. - another fail

See I can provide you with a LONG list of very hard to beat DS games but you would probably won't care for a few of them because they DONT LOOK GRITTY ENOUGH.
Casual gamers who believe they are core are the worst.
