Sony says Bungie deal is a big win, Microsoft couldn't care less

Sony seems to be pretty ecstatic when Activision announced last Thursday that it has formed an exclusive partnership with Bungie, praising the move by the Halo developers as "a big win for gamers worldwide." According to Sony:

"The partnership between Bungie and Activision is a big win for gamers worldwide.Combining Bungie's creativity with the incredible power of PlayStation 3 will add serious muscle to action gaming. We look forward to extending Bungie’s 'next big action game universe' with PS3 users."

Bungie has yet revealed which platforms it's developing for now, but I guess it's safe to say that the PS3 is on their radar. Microsoft on the other, issued the following statement regarding the deal:

"Our partnership with Bungie as a first-party developer for Xbox 360 remains unchanged," the company stated. "Right now we’re deeply engaged with them on the development of Halo Reach, which is poised to be the biggest game of 2010."

I'm by no means a fanboy of either the 360 or the PS3, but when Microsoft paid a huge sum of money to buy multiplatform rights for Final Fantasy XIII, that was a lot more like "stealing" a game than a developer (Bungie) leaving it's publisher and joining another one so they can make multiplatform games.

And Halo will never be on the PS3, because Microsoft owns the rights to Halo, not Bungie.

I'm very curious to what their "universe" is going to be. I read an interview on I think Joystiq where they said they have it planned out how they want it to span, and they said they're approaching it with future installments of the universe in mind.. soo excited.

Wow, look at that, a sensational headline to draw more clicks to an otherwise bland story.

Bungie makes FPSs. We have enough of them across all consoles.

Hell, neither Bungie nor Activision have stated what platforms they're developing for yet. What if, just for giggles, Microsoft throws a huge pile of money at Activision to buy up whatever Bungie makes next as an exclusive? It's not like they're not prone to doing that?

Sales don't determine how "big" a game is. MW2 is the best selling game of all time, but I wouldn't call it "big". I brought jack shit to the table in terms of innovation. Heavy Rain, now that right there is huge.

to me the biggest game of the year so far has been God of War 3 and with games like Fallout New Vegas, Dead Space 2, Spec Ops the line, Socom 4, Ghost Recon future Soldier, and Even Call of Duty Black Ops i doubt Halo Reach is going to be the biggest game of 2010

Outside of Halo, Bungie weren't particularly successful. They also sold their soul to the devil at this point, so I imagine anything coming from Bungie will be somewhat lacking. They have pretty huge shoes to fill being the Halo developers, and if they don't deliver a huge experience, they will be shot down.
