Sony: Kinect's tech problems are big

Ó

kinect-bundleGlitches - apart from broken LCDs - have been running rampant since Microsoft's Kinect launch. While these are part and parcel of any gadget's primary launch, Sony believes that these are actually too big to overlook.

"We're not necessarily against Kinect or against depth cameras, it's just we feel like Move has more applicability across more genres so it fits better with what we try to do," said SCE software engineer Anton Mikhailov.

He continues: "Also I think the tech is abit, not so much immature, but not quite up to spec in what we think. Like the PlayStation Eye camera runs at 60 frames per second so it can track you very quickly whereas the Kinect and other depth camera are only 30 frames per second. So they are more suited for slower motions.

Dancing is still kind of okay and then the yoga stuff that they were doing, it fits that very well, whereas if you want to do quick punches it's harder to do that just because you can't see the player as quickly. And there's alos more latency, things like that. So you know, it's not particuarly a sexy result, it's just mostly technological problems."

But some of these "not so much minor" problems with Kinects technology that Mikhailov mentioned would be "the fact that it runs at 30 frames per second insetad of 60". Then they also have an issue with the resolution. "It's a 320x240 camera as far as I've heard and the out-to is 640x480 so neither of those are particularly hot resolutions but you can take what you get."

Why is Sony so interested in Kinect? Every bad article about it is "Sony says"...

And they want to bring up fps? They should be asking why a lot of their multiplatform games run at 30fps on their console but 60fps for Microsofts.

It sounds like Sony is jealous.

The CAMERA only captures 30 fps. Not that it runs 30.

And I don't know of any game that drops its fps that low on the PS3, and if they're are any, its devs fault for being lazy

At least M$ is taking a risk with something new like Nintendo regularly do, but Sony just wait for someone else to develop an idea and release it years later when Playstation gamers are getting pissed off with waiting.

Not new.

At any rate, I'm surprised the specs for kinect are so low. You'd think that M$ would have put some better cameras in there.

What NEW???

I suggest you read the full interview
http://www.videogamer.com/news/sony_on_why_ps_move_has_greater_appeal_than_kinect.html

I know improving existing things isn't as creative as coming up with new ideas (and people who do that deserve the credit) but when the concept is good but not quit perfect and there is some room for a needed improvements..why not! it's regard vital.

People would says "they just tried to reinvent the wheel"

What I think if no one tried to "redesign" the wheel, our cars nowadays would be just like Flintstones cars.

I just don't know why some people still regard it as something bad and shameful.

..............
Bottom line I don't care what's new and what's only an improved version ...

Novelty always were off with time....
What only remains are the experiences.

If people just accepted slight improvements everytime people would still be living in fancy looking caves, it's the people who innovate that make the real difference to the world, and i'll always offer more respect than something that's just slightly better. and also Eyetoy's a webcam with a console driver, nothing more nothing less, so Kinect is not just an upgrade when it has depth sensors, because it puts it in a completely different category.

Then why isn't move new? It adds depth sensing to motion controlling. By your same logic, Move should be in a completely different category.

Adding depth sensing improves upon the camera, it doesn't make it something entirely different.

I'm not arguing that Move is good for what it does and right now it is probably better for motion control, but it can only track a single point of light for each user in a way any webcam can do with the right software, but Kinect is hard designed to measure multiple points and depth, so it is a starting point for something new where Move is pretty much a dead-end unless it uses Kinect type depth sensing and multi point sensing.

Alow me to use your own word from previous post then :P

I agree with you 100%

But one more thing...
Improving existing things actually considered innovation =P

Quoting symbal:
but it can only track a single point of light for each user in a way any webcam can do with the right software, but Kinect is hard designed to measure multiple points and depth

well Kinect is so hardly designed that it never been HACKED EASILY and never will be.. as we never seen ANYONE write tracking code for it YET???!!.

My point is that it's not about the complexity of the system, sometimes simplicity is innovation too with less system hog.

The wii was the simplest system overall but yet it turn out to be the most innovative one.

.......
Stop comparing both systems already..they're different.. each one has it's own pros & cons.

I would say they can happily coexist in the same living room.

And I would love to see them get married in a hack =)

Actually no. The light is just for depth tracking. You still have the accelerometer and gyroscope. And thats all you really need.

Also, the kinect isn't hard to designed to do anything, its all done on the 360's side.

Sony on why PS Move is better than Kinect..

That figures, PS Move belongs to Sony and therefore they'll it seem better.

You can't really do a comparison between a controller vs a non-controller device, it's insane.

to answer you trolls. the kinect is essentially an eyetoy with a second camera to add depth perception. i don't know if you seen an actual kinect in action, but there's a giant delay, one that shouldn't be so noticeable.
and the only reason Microsoft gets anything that's "better" than what's on the ps3 is because they pay off developers instead of having some dignity.

Symbal, Playstation had the PS Eye for years. The Kinect is just the Eye with an infrared camera attached to it. Microsoft is actually copying playstation and are years behind. Sony had years of work to see that just a camera isn't the way to go for gaming, other than casual. That is why they created the Move.

I like Kinect and about half the games for it so far.. so go MS for giving us a non-controller based idea..

Sony DID NOT rip off nintendo. They IMPROVED upon their idea.

By that logic, M$ copied Sony with kinect.

For fuck sake Sony, leave their shit alone and release USEFUL SOFTWARE for PS3/PSP. Custom soundtrack, rings a bell?

And also, add more games to the PlayStation Store because it's nothing near to the real market.

Yep Symbal, Sony waits for the competitors to release something new so they'll figure how to make it even better.

You see, 3DS is coming out and obviously Sony is going to make PSP 2 much more advanced and powerful than 3DS, at least it's what it's expected.

Please Sony, stop these childish behaviours of yours.

Sony is absolutely right. There are so many problems with kinect it's almost unusable. I tried using it at a friend's house. Yes I really do have friends, I swear! Anyway, I couldn't get kinect to recognize movement in the 2 feet between my couch and TV. Only the superior Wii's motion controls work without fail.

Honestly I would think since we would be paying so much for Kinect that the camera would be great. But 30FPS is average but 60fps is better for capturing every single movement. I think 60FPS should have been the first choice instead of 30FPS for Kinect.

I own both console but I prefer 360 since I'm a FPS type of guy (Got the Keyboard & Mouse plug-in)

I was going to purchase Kinect for my daughters but seeing 30FPS doubts me. I honestly think that there will be a updated version (version 2) of Kinect in time and I think I will wait for that one to come out.

MangoScango: it doesn't matter who made the tech first sony failed at the eyetoy and Microsoft is going places with kinect.

Tho you can't say MS copied sony cause that was a failed idea who would copy a failed project not to mention you can only copy something if it is relatively the same, Kinect doesn't use the eyetoy hardware/software its actually IR / cam / Depth no one near Eyetoy specs.

when the eyetoy Which is being used with move to follow a pretty light just like the wii to claim 1:1...

ontopic: it is that they are pissed cause they didn't take a jump that "succeeded" thier last jump with eyetoy failed considerably so they are hating on the kinect, But so far i see no problems with the game or hardware it just takes good coders to overcome alot of troubles!

# RE: lolMangoScango 2010-11-30 06:19
I don;t think the Eyetoy "failed", but that is totally irrelevant.

I'm not saying M$ copied sony. It was an example. And your right, they IMPROVED upon the eyetoy. And of fucking course it doesn't use the Eyetoys hardware, are you saying the Move uses the Wiis? what the fuck!? The kinects specs are actually very similar to eyetoys actually, 320 x 240 @ 30fps. The only real difference is the depth sensors. Adding those IMPROVED it. The Wiiremote (with motion plus) has an accelerometer and gyroscope. The Move adds depth sensing as well, in the form of light tracking.

How is adding depth sensing to one tech innovation, and adding it to another copying?

Actually the Playstation Eye is being used with the move, which is an upgraded version of Eyetoy (60fps at 640 x 320, I think). And yeah, it "follows the light" and IS 1:1. The combination of the 3 techs involved with move allow for 1:1 motion tracking, you get the exact value of where the controller is and its orintation. Where as the Wii is nowhere near that. The wii on its own uses an accelerometer and IR. the gyroscope with wiimotion plus helps, but it still doesn't make it 1:1. They are not the same. If ninty ever claimed that, they were fucking lying. Please, don't talk hardware when you're clueless about it.

And for fucks sake, he wasnt hating on the kinect, he was explaining the problems he saw with it. He explained why they didn't use kinects tech in the Eye. He pointed out that theres somethings where the tech is sufficient, and others where its not. Thats not hating.

Kinect is NOT eyetoy! Kinect works on an entirely different principle, so if you keep saying stupid crap like that, then you're either stubborn, or an idiot.
And move is basically a direct rip of wii, and everyone is surprised that kinect is actually kinda fun. Deal with it...
I have a ps3 and an xbox, and I am waiting to see which motion controller I invest in, and to be honest, at this point kinect looks like it'll be loads of fun when it actually gets some good software. Sony talk about Kinect more than they talk about Move. Just makes people more curious.
Sorry Sony fanboys, but this *is* a new idea and it *is* generating a lot of buzz. Go bitch about it on a sony forum.

Er, idiot, mind telling me HOW the Kinect is different from the eyetoy? depth? yeah, thats what the Move adds to the whole Wii setup. Adding features isn't ripping it off. Fuck.

No one's surprised that the kinect is fun. Of course it is. If you have both consoles get both controllers, then decide for yourself which one's better. As for me, I couldn't care less which one is "better". I just get pissed when people say stupid shit like this.

why all the arguments jeez this is depressing. i have an idea instead talking out of your ignorant asses why not just try them both out and see which one you like better. i have the move and its way better than the wii's motion tracking. now am i saying the wii sucks no i am not. im simply stating my observations from playing both of them. i haven't tried the kinect and do think its limited in it use im pretty sure its very fun for what it is used for. get a life and stop arguing about which one you read is better. i am done here i will go do what i do best and thats play video games.

How is the Move a rip off of the Wii? I don't believe the Wii uses a camera to track movement so that argument fails miserably. And it wasn't like Sony blatantly said "The Kinect sucks. Buy the Move". They simply pointed out the flaws which many people would over look he even said the dancing and yoga is okay. So how is that hating? Man y'all take crap and twist it in every way possible. It's criticism which SHOULD be said because God only knows big company's mostly care about their competition and not the consumers. So at least Microsoft can make the improvements.

The wii does run off a camera. It's in the end of the remote, an infrared camera. It tracks your position by looking at 2 infrared points (te sensor bar is just 2 lights). It's like picking up the move camera, then moving it around someone standing still.

I think it's ridiculous how the Wii was suppose to track movements and shit accurately, but then the Wii Plus comes out. And if it does uses "cameras", it doesn't work all that great or I got shafted by Wal-Mart.

holy crap that camera is huge!! i thought it was going to be the size of the ps3 eye, but it's humongo. that's nothing against it though, it just took me by surprise. what i do have against it is the fact it didnt work when i tried playing on it at best buy; it wouldn't register the 2nd player at all no matter what i did. i simple reboot of the system would have done it, probably..that was like a couple weeks ago.

i did get to see some people playing, what looked like wii boxing, on it and i wasn't impressed. one dude was like "it seems to be more affective like this" while mimicking what we all think girls and gays fight, you know, the whole arms-way-out-in-front-doggie-paddle-don't-want-to-break-nail-thing?

Kinect already sold 2.5 mil and Sony hasn't really released their numbers even though move did come out first. Remember Sony shipped 4. Something million not sold..... Two different things. I would of bought the move but it looks like a dildo and I'm pretty sure it vibrates. I have both consoles and so far the ps3 hasn't seen any play because theirs no ps3 exclusive tittles out yet and fps are better on the 360. I have the kinect and it's real fun.....
