Sony: Ken Kutaragi made the right decision for the PS3

Back when the PS3's launch price was first announced, people thought Sony -- most notably Ken Kutaragi -- overspecced the console. Now that the price has gone down considerably Sony thinks that Kutaragi has at last been vindicated.

"Ken Kutaragi specced this machine many years ago and people thought he over-specced it," UK PlayStation boss Ray Maguire told CVG. "I think what we're proving is that he was right.

"Although the specification made it a GB£ 425 entry level machine, that was exactly the right thing to do because it gives us much more longevity in terms of life-cycle. The last thing I would want to do be doing is replacing three cheaper machines over three years - rather than having something like PS3 that lasts for seven to ten years."

In the US, the PS3 hit retail for US$ 500. It has since gone down in price to a more manageable level thanks mainly to the introduction of the PS3 Slim and further alterations made to the console's insides.

Psh! I wasn't aware he needed any vindication: the launch ps3 was awesome, and Sony is freakin' stupid for watering the ps3 down. I don't know if they still would have removed ps2 emulation if Kuturagi were still around (or did they remove it before he left?), or if they would've removed other os, and I guess we'll never know, but for me, Kuturagi was everything that's right with playstation and I doubt the next systems (psp2, ps4) will be as good.

Phil Harrison also did a lot of things to improve the PS3 software wise. A combination of both would be awesome.

If you include the Pre-Release specs, they also lost 2 extra USB ports(originall y it had 2 extra in the back), and an extra Ethernet and HDMI port as well.

I got mine 60GB model for $600 and the 20GB model was $500. Funny how we forget when all these other models come out since then. My 60GB model is upgraded with a 500GB hard-drive and I love the full features. Full PS2 backwards compatibility.

Ken was the reason the PS3 could do so much. The thing could hook up with anything, and the OS support was awesome. Now they just wanna take everything out and make it a barebones piece of crap.

Yes sony took away O.S feature but they did it to protect us. Just think about it if the ps3 was hacked this could lead to stolen information like credit cards and such and frankly i really don't Fraud because sony allowed hackers. Plus they already said O.S will be back they just need to fix the hacking situation.

Umm, there have been more versions of the PS3 in the last 3 years already. 60GB, 80GB, 40GB, 20GB, 120GB Slim, 250GB Slim.

The 60GB is the original PS3 and there is no way that was going to last 10 years.
Even the slim is not going to last 10 years as it's a crap piece of crap.

With $ony's record of releasing a new PS3 with more missing features I think soon we will be seeing a 2nd slim come out without a blueray drive then 3rd slim that is just an empty plastic box.

Playstation lost a 80 to 90 million console lead. It's now battling for second. I know PS3 owners are happy with their system and games, but overall the company must be disappointed that it lost it's market dominance.

a bunch of people moaning about some shitty changes.

How many of you have used the memory card readers on the PS3 for those who have it? I have a 60GB and I've yet to use the thing. It's easy to transfer over to the system without it.

Also. How many USB cords do you currently have hooked into your PS3? I have three controllers yet only one USB cord hooked up. The USB cord hooked up to my PS3 is also a non wireless headset. I've got a PC with PSP charger/USB cord that I actually use to charge my controllers when that sort of rarity occurs.

Other OS. Over half of you bitching about it I can guarantee have never used it. You may continue crying a river.

PS2 backwards compatibility is the only thing that has been removed that really sucks for gamers that don't have a 60GB or 80GB(screw the 20GB.) But you know what? Sucks to be you guys.

But hey, how about this. Let's see. How many of you own a PSP? Ever hear of ad-hoc party? So Sony removes mostly useless stuff on the new PS3 systems or Other OS on all systems, but they add a ton of content to the PS3. The only content I care about is ad-hoc party.

Dissidia, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Power Stone, Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max, Phantasy Star Portable, Gundam Battle Universe, and Gundam vs Gundam are all examples of PSP games that are ad-hoc only. If it wasn't for Sony creating the ad-hoc party, then we wouldn't be able to play these games with other friends over larger distances.

For example. My bestfriend lives 30 minutes away, so instead of needing to hang out in order to play a PSP game together, we can just get on ad-hoc party. Whenever I'm doing stuff with friends might not be a time that I want to play PSP. Other friends of mine live around the same distance or some live out of state and those that aren't too many states away and have a good broadband connection, then the PSP games can be ran full speed or close enough to where it's not noticeable.

So yeah. All you people bitch about are features you've never used or never will use. But new features that are added happen to escape your mind. People just like to bitch if I say so myself.

Yeah, I won't complain, and yes. I use Adhoc party as well, but not everyone probably does, and I think if you want ps2 emulation, just buy a damn ps2, or find one in a pawn shop or something, probably can get one for what? 40-50 bucks? Other OS, there isn't even enough RAM for even Linux to run smoothly, with the GPU locked, it sucked major balls anyway. There are third parties that sell the media card crap for those of you who actually used it, as for charging, if its just you alone, you only need 1 usb cord anyway, if its multiple, then split the cost, and go buy a ps3 controller charging dock. Remember, Sony is a BUSINESS, not your Mother, lol. They care about you, but they aren't there to spoil and fulfill your every cry. (Especially if it could screw them over in the end, like the security flaw in other OS) yes, there's been lawsuits for removing it, but I can already see an idiot filing a lawsuit for getting hacked through other OS. Lol.
