Sony considering its own 'online pass' for first-party games

It seems EA's "Project $10" and other similar initiatives from Ubisoft and THQ are quite a hit with Sony. The latter is even thinking of somehow incorporating a similar system in their first-party titles.

"On the principle of making online portions of the game available or unlocked from the disc-based release for a fee, we're broadly supportive of that," SCEE president Andrew House said in an interview with GamesIndustry. House further added that Sony is "exploring actively" for something similar to add to their first-party content.

Sony, however, is still undecided on the idea of instituting a paid online subscription service so that players will have to pay for basic online play.

"In terms of just a charge for basic online play, that's something that we have to talk about a lot more and we struggle with a little bit," House said. "Because we feel very vindicated and base a lot of the success of PSN today -- a 70 per cent connection rate across consoles -- on the fact that we've removed that major initial barrier to entry."

Keep the low boundary, don't force used/borrowed/somehow lost the code people to pay to play something they already own.

Unless you also want to lower the price of your games down to where they were for a long time? The $40-50 range?

This is complete crap. I will never buy a game that makes you pay extra for online, or that includes a one-time key for online. Used games are a part of the industry and the devs need to just freakin' accept that and stop trying to shut it down. $60 is a lot and if I don't like the game enough to keep it, I have the right to sell it to someone else who will.

Seriously, don't buy any games that use this trick. If nobody buys them, they'll have to rethink their strategy.

Of course, I have little hope that buyers will actually thwart their plans. Gamers seem to be the biggest freakin' suckers--the success of a console with a 50% failure rate and the proliferation of dlc (almost all of it overpriced and much of it actually included on the discs but held back to squeeze a few extra dollars from us) is testament to that. In the end, the companies will keep coming up with ways of screwing the consumers and they'll just keep paying.

The idea is that if you buy the game new from a retailer, it will come with a code that allows online play.

However it's a one time use code, which can be tied to your PSN (so no losing it). You would only pay the $10 or whatever if you bought a used copy.

I like the idea, since I think used games are a rip off. I only buy them when they are $10-15 and it's usually for a single player experience.

I'd rather support Sony and other Devs instead of Gamestop/EB which rips both devs and customers off....

Supporting Gamestop is stupid for stuff like this. If the game came out this generation and you want to play online just support the developer. Now if we're talkin' old used PS2/Xbox/Gamecube (or maybe PC) games that don't sell new anyway go for it. 5-10 bucks is a steal in my opinion for great games.

I understand the how and why. I just don't agree. Personally, I'm not much of a fan of used games. Nothing against them: I just like having stuff in the best condition I can and saving $5 isn't worth having a beat up case and a game with "light scratches." But I like having the option to sell off the games that I don't get all that into: it may be a good game, but I just have no desire to play it again. Devs just need to accept the fact that they're selling the game to people--not just an individual license for one person to play it--an actual physical product which doesn't belong to them any more once it's been sold. But now they want to cripple that product so that it's no good to anybody but me once I buy it: they're diminishing its value to me because now I can't sell it or have to sell it for less. It's a very dickish move on their part, and I can't believe any consumers are ok with it. They're diminishing the value of a product, both by making it harder to resell and by holding back content to use as dlc, and gamers, being the freakin' suckers they are, are happily continuing to buy it.

Why don't you rent games to try them out rather than paying $40+ to try a used copy?

If they make it so that I have to pay monthly to play uncharted 2 or little big planet or any other of my
FREE-to-play online games then I really hope that the homebrew community bring down hell over sony. Sony will see that they cant keep removing good features all the time. Cause now we want them back!

You dont read too well do you. Sony is trying to do what EA did. Buy a code that allows you to play online. There is no monthly fee, you pay $30 for the used game and $10 for the code that allows you to play that game online. THERE IS NO MONTHLY FEE.

So far the plan is not to make this a monthly fee, this is a result of people who buy used games of which the publishers make no money off but still have to maintain servers running every month which is costing them.

So this is more of a strategy to buy the game new than used, which can cost the publishers a very high price since the used market would drop significantly and people would do it less and think more of what games to buy since most probably they wont be able to sell them used at the price theyve so far been able.

I understand this strategy though I don´t really think is a good one and I think it can seriously backfire on them.

Now see I disagree that devs aren't making money off used games. They made their money when it was sold as new. If I buy LittleBigPlanet and play it online every day for a year, the server cost is the same as it would be if I played it for two months, then sold it to someone else who played it every day for the next 10 months (I use lbp as example, because I do play it pretty much every day). Now perhaps that second guy plays it every day for two years instead: then it would indeed cost more to run the servers... but indefinite access to the servers (while they're still up) was part of the deal when I bought the game: if I had wanted to play it every day for five years, that was included when they sold me the game. I sold my access to the server along with the game to the other guy: no additional access has been taken from the devs and there's not an extra copy of the game out there so they're not entitled to any extra money.

# RE: RE: RE: ...Apollo887 2010-08-26 10:59
The fact that theres no extra copy of the game in the market is actually the point, used game sales cannibalize new game sales and the publishers want to receive money from people who use their servers regardless of how they got the game.

As I said, that can seriously backfire since the used game market would suffer and people would end up thinking more about what games to buy since they cant sell them for such "high" price and then would have to chip in more money to get a new game.

As for renters Id suppose they would also have a plan to use the servers for some short period of time for a fraction of the price.

So I can see where the publishers come from but I think that in the long run it will backfire.

Paying for extra features NOT on disc? Sure. Paying for basic online? No.

This is really not surprising if you recall Resident Evil 5 multiplayer having to be "pay for". Really... this is going to be a trend for years to come.

Not if the game was Free-to-play when you bought it... I mean..
Its ok with Final Fantasy 14 cause you know when you buy it that it's not Free-to-play and you can then make your choice if its worth it.

I understand that sony wants us to pay for the network. I also do spend a good deal of money on getting advancements in my online account. I am not willing though to spend the money per game to play online. I don't mind playstation plus it was bound to happen. Lets face it Sony PS3 is designed for the adult male who can afford it and the titles that come out for it are awesome. I like it as a playstation network for a yearly fee though not per game. EA Games can take a hike if they charge to play after I buy the title cause they never add anything cool as a bonus. Zipper on the other hand I will continue to donate parts of every check because they have so much follow up and open review with each title released

I think the idea is to provide only a single activation with a copy of a game. So those buying new games get the online included for free. E.g Sony makes roughly the same profit.
If you trade a game, get second hand, then you may not have an unused online activation code. Since Sony makes no new profit in that second hand trade I think its only fair to charge for an online upgrade charge.

Why is it? They make more than enough on the initial sale of games as it is.

This is just another way of them being greedy asshats.

Are they trying to make people pirate games because that's one of the main reasons people pirate. The companies are charging too much. And we all know they are.

If they do this, it will discourage renters/second-hand buyers, but the games will still be expensive. The whole reason why people rent in the first place. So for this to work they better drop the price of new games to better encourage those renters to buy.

Im a renter, if they make something for me in the game pay only, then im just going to suck fuck it at convert PC gaming.

wonder how long it will be before they decide level 8 is a bonus that you shouldnt get just by paying for the game or maybe you wont deserve to have certain guns or moves if you dont have their stupid code, all i have to say id prepare to be bled very dry by these leeches

In my country there's a saying that goes "they're gonna bring it using the kitchen door". In other words it seems they are looking for a way to push online subscriptions without labeling it as such(using a backdoor approach).
