Sony considering its own 'online pass' for first-party games |
Listed in: PS3 Tags: PlayStation Network, psn, SCEE, Sony

It seems EA's "Project $10" and other similar initiatives from Ubisoft and THQ are quite a hit with Sony. The latter is even thinking of somehow incorporating a similar system in their first-party titles.
"On the principle of making online portions of the game available or unlocked from the disc-based release for a fee, we're broadly supportive of that," SCEE president Andrew House said in an interview with GamesIndustry. House further added that Sony is "exploring actively" for something similar to add to their first-party content.
Sony, however, is still undecided on the idea of instituting a paid online subscription service so that players will have to pay for basic online play.
"In terms of just a charge for basic online play, that's something that we have to talk about a lot more and we struggle with a little bit," House said. "Because we feel very vindicated and base a lot of the success of PSN today -- a 70 per cent connection rate across consoles -- on the fact that we've removed that major initial barrier to entry."

Unless you also want to lower the price of your games down to where they were for a long time? The $40-50 range?

Seriously, don't buy any games that use this trick. If nobody buys them, they'll have to rethink their strategy.
Of course, I have little hope that buyers will actually thwart their plans. Gamers seem to be the biggest freakin' suckers--the success of a console with a 50% failure rate and the proliferation of dlc (almost all of it overpriced and much of it actually included on the discs but held back to squeeze a few extra dollars from us) is testament to that. In the end, the companies will keep coming up with ways of screwing the consumers and they'll just keep paying.

However it's a one time use code, which can be tied to your PSN (so no losing it). You would only pay the $10 or whatever if you bought a used copy.
I like the idea, since I think used games are a rip off. I only buy them when they are $10-15 and it's usually for a single player experience.
I'd rather support Sony and other Devs instead of Gamestop/EB which rips both devs and customers off....

FREE-to-play online games then I really hope that the homebrew community bring down hell over sony. Sony will see that they cant keep removing good features all the time. Cause now we want them back!

So this is more of a strategy to buy the game new than used, which can cost the publishers a very high price since the used market would drop significantly and people would do it less and think more of what games to buy since most probably they wont be able to sell them used at the price theyve so far been able.
I understand this strategy though I don´t really think is a good one and I think it can seriously backfire on them.

Now see I disagree that devs aren't making money off used games. They made their money when it was sold as new. If I buy LittleBigPlanet and play it online every day for a year, the server cost is the same as it would be if I played it for two months, then sold it to someone else who played it every day for the next 10 months (I use lbp as example, because I do play it pretty much every day). Now perhaps that second guy plays it every day for two years instead: then it would indeed cost more to run the servers... but indefinite access to the servers (while they're still up) was part of the deal when I bought the game: if I had wanted to play it every day for five years, that was included when they sold me the game. I sold my access to the server along with the game to the other guy: no additional access has been taken from the devs and there's not an extra copy of the game out there so they're not entitled to any extra money.

As I said, that can seriously backfire since the used game market would suffer and people would end up thinking more about what games to buy since they cant sell them for such "high" price and then would have to chip in more money to get a new game.
As for renters Id suppose they would also have a plan to use the servers for some short period of time for a fraction of the price.
So I can see where the publishers come from but I think that in the long run it will backfire.

Its ok with Final Fantasy 14 cause you know when you buy it that it's not Free-to-play and you can then make your choice if its worth it.

Tell that to all the students who have a PS3 but can only afford a new game once every couple of months

If you trade a game, get second hand, then you may not have an unused online activation code. Since Sony makes no new profit in that second hand trade I think its only fair to charge for an online upgrade charge.

This is just another way of them being greedy asshats.
Are they trying to make people pirate games because that's one of the main reasons people pirate. The companies are charging too much. And we all know they are.
