Sony confirms Premium PSN service

Yes folks, it's coming! Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president Andrew House has confirmed their plans to introduce the often-rumored PSN pay-to-play service in a recent fan in question & answer post. According to House:

"I can assure you that the current PSN as you know it will remain a free service. It is something that our competitors don’t offer and something that shows our loyalty to the PlayStation Community. However, Kaz Hirai stated a few months ago that we were looking at a premium service to sit alongside the current free service and that objective has not changed. You’ll learn more about it very soon."

And by "soon" he might mean as early as next month at E3. Stay tuned.

As you said it all depends on what will remain free, a paid PSN service and features should be purely optional and should not discriminate the free PSN users by giving paid users unfair advantages over free users or in any other way. If these conditions are met then I wouldn't mind.

I am also an Xbox LIVE subscriber ($50 a year) and I'm glad PSN will remain free. Xbox LIVE is a better mutliplayer experience than PSN and I would never pay for PSN. I still wonder what the premium features will be. Knowing Sony it probably won't be worth it.

Like 3-4 bucks a month is sooo much money. At least the 360 doesn't need a disc to play netflix at a lower resolution. I just got my PS3 and Wii discs from netflix today today and they both sucked. Wii of course was 480p since it's a last gen system and the PS3 only did 720p which I thought was weird. Let the console bashing begin :D

50 bucks for a yearly subscription is pretty much one game i wasn´t able to buy a year, may sound a little cheap of me but Q4 nowadays is way to busy for not having said 50 bucks, it'd be something along the lines of SSFIV or a yearly suscription to Live.

So it may not be a lot of money but it adds up.

Just so you know, the hd resolution that netflix sends is native 720p. Your not really seeing any difference on the 360. Even my pc set for a higher resolution isn't really showing a true 1080p depth of detail. The bitrate is not the same as with Blu-ray.

The Zii..But its supposed to be more then twice the power of Wii and Game-cube..And you should realize Nintendo is a very Innovative Company!..

Actually I'm pretty interested in what they can come up with, don't think I'll be getting it since pretty much all I'm really interested is the online gaming which we already get.

Ayways having an actually good free service is a pretty decent selling point because people will eventually compare Live's silver account and the free PSN.

I want cross game chat and of course improved backwards compat (still buggy on the games that I like), but I don't wanna pay for it. I can't think of anything else that I would want really. Since I already have BC and cross game chat isn't that big of a deal, unless they add something else that I would like then it's not worth my money.

I doubt this will work like gameshare. Sony are introducing this service to make money. Being able to split and share premium features between several users is not a sensible way to increase profits and Sony would not be able to prevent people from abusing it.

It will work the same way as XBL Gold - If 2 360s in the same household want to play online at the same time then they would need 2 different IDs and 2 separate purchases of XBL Gold.

I'd guess that it's not something installed or downloaded but something unlucked that you can use in your account like your friends for example which are loaded into the account itself and doesn't matter where you log in.

This will probably include cross game chat and server priority. Meaning that the Prem pack users may connect to random game matches faster (matching like soul cal) as well as having an overall better connection to the server.
This both makes the Prem service worth getting as well as gimping the free service w/o taking away any features.

When he says "the current PSN as you know it will remain a free service" does that mean that the current is the last update it will ever have and they will only be updating the paid service from now on?

Whats the difference between the current PSN service and xbox live silver? We get to play online for free. thats about it. XBL Gold and PSN+ are going to be the same but I bet in the future the "free to play" will be dropped and only the PSN+ will be playable online.

$ony have lied in the past (OtherOS) so whats stopping them from lying again to us?

We already have a lot more than a Silver account. Almost as much as a Gold on XBox Live with the exception of cross game chat. They are thinking about adding a token system to the premium service, when you get so many tokens you can unlock free stuff from the store

# RE: RE: Sony confirms Premium PSN serviceApollo887 2010-05-27 04:21
Yeah I think the only difference between silver and current PSN is playing online and that's why people pay for golds mostly.

I don't think the free to play part will be dropped since having that competitive edge is good for sony since selling the whole package has been their strategy for quite a long time and a lot of their market buys it for that, if they drop such free to play a lot of people would be hard pressed to only pay for one service and keep the other console offline and with the 360's popularity that wouldn't leave sony in a good spot.

And well I'm not gonna get into a discussion of the OtherOS feature since I think we'll never agree os it's kinda pointless, but I don't see how sony lied to us.

Yea? I never saw them say that the otherOS was always gonna be there, where is the source for that? They saw a security risk to their console and took it off. Which I agree I dont like either but I seriously never heard them state that it would always be there and "lied to us".

And no they said they wanted to keep the current service free, which the current service is the one where they offer you to download new demos for free and play online for free etc.

Okay, you 'OtherOS' groupies listen

Sony dropped 'OtherOS' due to security concerns, so saying that "OMG OMG Sony took our 'OtherOS' feature, now they guna take our 'Free PSN' service and itl be replaced my PSN+" is COMPLETELY stupid. They do not have security concerning reasons as to why they would need to do that. So just get over that ok?

There will be two service: Paid and the current one. Both will get the same updates, but paid is expected to have smoother service and some exclusive like XBL. So if you want better servers when playing online, go premium, if not, stay with the normal one, it's pretty good as it is and best of it's free. As for those who say XBL>PSN or vice versa, it's preference. No one cares which you prefer. Both PS3 and xbox are awesome 8)

I am mixed right now on being happy about this premium service until I here more details. They might say that what we get now will not change but possibly over time, the basic service may get more watered down to where we get less than what we are used to seeing and payed for content, may be higher than it normally would because we did not pay a monthly fee or something. The only thing I can say I would like to see as far as a paid for premium service is a flat rate to view unlimited movies. Something comparable to netflix.

I remember reading about this in the past and seeing something like PS1 classics may be something they would include in a premuim service.

Also I would bet money that eventually you would end up getting the premium service for one reason or another.

& Some one above stated if you have to pay to play on both consoles that they would only pay for xbox because it has better features. I think people would pay for PSN+ and keep their 360's for back up/ burnt/ pirated/ stolen games < or whatever you guys are calling them these days.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind paying sony some $$ if it meant getting Demos & Trial games (PSN is severely lacking in this dept. at times) and possibly decrease lag on MP games.

Other than that I really couldn't think of anything else that could be improved, maybe earlier release dates for some titles through PSN+ ?

essentially, Sony offered crappy service for two+ years for nothing. Now, think this through, the same ppl who thought it was a good idea to offer crappy service and overpriced games. Now, want you to pay for their services. The only way this is a value is if you have multi-systems.

At this point, if you only have a PS3, you might want to reevaluate the term "value".

And, just to dig in a little, my PS3 toasted. I bought a Pana BR player instead and it's like night and day.

Best of Luck.

Pretty Simple Folks

Just have to read what they say, "you will have everything you already have now."

Translation, all current games will remain free for online play. New upcoming games will require a premium service. They took nothing away you already have that is how Sony works lately.

Can't speak for everyone but I legitimately used Ubuntu on my PS3 and it took me quite some time to get all the bugs worked out. Time I will never get back. Sony since that update has given me nothing new of worth from updates and now is planning on charging for new features from now on. I love my PS3 and will continue to use it but I am really not happy with Sony's choices lately.

Those security concerns they talk about required you to take your PS3 apart and it would of taken months for it even to be worth anything. They jumped the gun and instead of patching the issue just removed the feature.

Those who complain about the Eula they change the Eula all the time and really that in itself shouldn't be legal. Think about it you say I have a choice when they change the Eula. My choice is to accept and keep functionality or refuse and lose functionality I paid for. It's amazing its like making a contract with someone and then they can change the contract whenever they feel like it. If you don't like the changes then the contract is broken and they don't have to deal with you anymore. Does that really seem legal to you people?
