Sony celebrates PSOne's 15th birthday in North America |
Listed in: PSP, PS3 Tags: Playstation, PlayStation Network, Sony
The first PlayStation was released in December 1994 in Japan, but as far as North America is concerned, it's September 9th, 1995 - that's 15 years ago today. Man, how time flies. We can still play some of the games to this day, but times have really changed since then. To mark this special milestone, Sony is taking the celebration into the PlayStation Network.
Some of the offers include:
- Free downloadable PS3 & PSP static themes available for download on the PlayStation Store starting today
- Weekly discounts on select PS One titles within the PlayStation 15th anniversary collection page, available in all SCEA territories on PS3, PSP & Media Go Storefronts. In addition to a 50 percent sale on Super Rub A Dub (Super Rub A Dub offer good from Thursday, September 9, 2010 - through Monday, September 20, 2010).
- A PlayStation Home commemorative Original PlayStation® (PS One) ornament for personal spaces available starting today.
"When you look in the rearview mirror at what was happening in 1995 you see that the video game industry was an entirely different animal. Cartridges were still the preferred medium, and the market was a modest $2.6 billion in sales revenue annually. Many critics thought that a disc-based console with a lot of horse power would shoot over the heads of consumers, but our users proved them wrong," said SCEA CEO Jack Tretton. "Now, we are seeing a convergence of video games and home entertainment, and a market that is a robust $20 billion in revenue. In the next 15 years and beyond PlayStation will continue to bring new and more immersive experiences, like stereoscopic 3D, augmented reality as well as genre-defying gameplay into consumer living rooms."
It all began as a big risk for Sony, but the PlayStation brand would eventually become one of the biggest names in the industry, The ten-year old and still standing PlayStation 2 remains the best-selling video game console of all time, while the seventh-gen PS3 is spearheading its way into 3D gaming.
But no matter where PlayStation goes, we all gotta pay respect to the grey box that started it all. Happy birthday PlayStation!

I'm giving Sony one more year before I give up and they lose me as a customer.

then again ps does have a blu-ray player! :) although it does have its drawbacks for that too. the settings, if u choose the one sound setting u risk loosing some of ur sound.
so ps is better cause some games are only playable on it (kingdom hearts 1, 2 and birth by sleep) and has blu-ray, but xbox by far exceeds ps with everything else.
oh and xbox is backwords compatable with some of its games (fable for ex.), the ps3... not so much or should i say not at all.
this comes from a ps 2 lover till i got an xbox. till sony catches up, the games are what makes me want a ps3 at all.

Whoopeee!
(What is it?)
PSX rules!
N64 had some mighty fine Arcade ports, and mario I guess if you were into that.
But most of the groundbreaking, creative and "grown up" games were on the PSX.
That was the system that got me back into playing games again.
Shame to see Sony losing its edge recently, but I haven't given up yet.
I've still got faith.
(Come on ps3 HB!)
