Sony bares plans of Chinese expansion

With Nintendo seemingly having a good relationship with China, it's no wonder Sony's setting out to try their luck out as well hitting the world's largest growing market. China Daily reports that Sony Computer Entertainment is moving along with its plans of expanding to the country.

So said the report, Sony has already signed off on a letter of intent, which talks about their plans of bringing in training and R&D facilities in Guangzhou. If all goes well and they are allowed entry, then this will be the company's "first investment by SCEI in the mainland." Sony also expressed their intent to develop games in the region.

China's stand has been very strict in allowing foreign companies working within their territory. Specific to the gaming industry is their standing ban on the importation of gaming consoles, with a few exceptions, such as Nintendo's original DS and their up and coming 3DS. If Sony does break through the Chinese market, then nothing but good things are expected for the sales of the PlayStation consoles.

Local investor Guangdong Animation City (GAC) gives his observation that the gaming industry in China could see an expansion in growth worth over 100 billion yuan (US$ 15 billion) every year, within the next five years, so this investment should definitely be a healthy investment for Sony to jump into.

Again, IF China gives its approval.

Isnt China EXTREMELY concerned with video games as a problem? If i remember correctly, all home game consoles were banned, resulting in a bunch of "fake chinese ripoffs"?

Maybe PS3 games will soon be available on those Chinese cheap shops, nah kidding.

Can't say i agree with the lack of freedom the Chinese people have but i do kinda understand, because it's a very bad idea to suddenly go from crippling communism to western type freedom within a few years. And you can see their government's gradually relaxing on everything so people have time to acclimitise to what we take for granted, so if you think about it China is doing the right thing.

I wonder if games are made in China, will they be exported at low, low prices to everywhere else?
And if so, will they drive domestic companies in the US out of business?
Maybe, but there will likely be a region lock, even on the PS3.

If I was CHINA, I'd let Japanese Corps NOT exploit CHINA at all. I'd still be SORE at them for what they did to the Chinese in WW2.....that includes the experimentation they performed on the people..........................F^$K IT!
In my view, If its Japanese, it should be made in Japan.......If its American, it should be made in the US etc etc.
That'll keep everyone in a job right!?
Besides, outsourcing sux. How the hell are you suppose to keep an economy going when most of the population are out of work because the BIG CORPS don't employ their own. Besides, China do very well producing Knock-offs & MOD devices.

Thats weird that Videogames are illegal in China.

Generally nice people, I like them, but I've noticed that they tend to be tyrannical in positions of authority or power.

(If there is anything more rude and abusive of their position than a chick cop its a Chinese cop.)
