Rumor: PSP2 is 'f*cking powerful', has dual cameras and touchscreen

Following rumors of the PSP2 appearing at E3, some further "details" have reportedly been uncovered regarding the long-rumored Sony handheld.

You'll notice that "details" are in quotes, but that's just because none of the following info have been verified by Sony yet. Nevertheless, here's what gaming blog VG247 dug up:

MCV rumoured last week that Sony “could” announce PSP2 at E3.
VG247 goes digging. According to a source familiar with the matter, it’s “99 percent” it isn’t an E3 reveal.
Multiple British sources have confirmed that PSP2 NDAs have been in place at publishers and developers for many months.
PSP2 has two cameras, one forward and one backward facing.
It has a touch-screen, but apparently it has retained the trademark physical PlayStation buttons.
UK sources were previously working towards a “2010″ release. This is now “2011″.
One source would be “amazed” if there was any kind of physical media involved. We’ve been told it “could” be 3G-enabled, as opposed to the WiFi-only PSP go. This bit was sketchy.
Multiple PSP2 games are being made in Britain right now. Some have even already been canned.
There have been “finished units” in the UK, but we haven’t spoken to anyone that’s seen a final case.
When asked directly about reveal timing, one source said, “If the games were aiming for end 2010, beginning 2011, and now it’s a 2011 release, I’d say a gamescom or TGS announce for launch early next year”.
One source told us the machine is “f*cking powerful,” being based on a four-core Cell CPU. PS3 runs on an eight-core version.

Remember, this is a rumor. Rumor rumor rumor. Can't stress that enough.

Everyone's talking about Ps2 emulation but imagine the power consumption on something running games like that, even with all the low power consumption tech they could throw at it you'd need a HUGE battery to make it practical, and don't forget the heating problems, if they can manage it i'll tear your arm off to get one but i'm not getting my hopes up, but if Sony had any sense they'd use a stripped down Ps2 SDK so they can port Ps2 games and strip out the textures and resolution a handheld won't need so developers have low development costs on massive Ps2 back catalogues, but of course this is Sony we talking about so they'll just end up with some crappy difficult SDK that no-one likes.

Just because it's apparently utilising the Cell Broadband Engine, there's nothing to indicate that it's going to be running at the full 3.2GHz clock speed.

The Cell Engine was designed with efficiency in mind. So even at a clock speed comparable to what the PSP uses right now, it could still pull off better performance. Also keep in mind that technology has advanced somewhat since the original PSP was released; the PSP2 is going to be produced with the 60nm process at the very least, possibly even 45nm, which means less power consumption, allowing increased clock speeds.

Cell technology has also improved somewhat, too, so I don't see half the console being taken up by a battery anytime soon.

Lugging around a keyboard isn't exactly what I had in mind. I might as well run dosbox on an MSI or something.

I was thinking more along the lines of a on screen pop up keyboard that you can navigate through.

The C64 emu has one, which also makes it the most usable of the old OS emulators IMO.

In fact I find it kind of irritating that sony didn't use one like that on the psp's own OS instead of that clunky cell phone style input.

But thanks for the heads up though. Interesting project.

Don't you remember when ps3's consume
200 watts? Sony blamed the cell processor.
Besides the cell is difficult to program for, meaning less minis and games.
Software is the issue.
the web browser could be faster.
It could support more codecs for video.
burnout looked amazing on the psp.
we just need to push the psp to the limits. modnation looks horrible on the psp.

The PS3 is still being pushed.

The unit I've seen (just a dev unit) did have an optical drive. Not sure if that will make it into the final thing but I sincerely hope so. It's not feasible to rely on download-only just yet. Our studios sales are so much more on physical media than downloads. Same for my friends at other studios.

Heh, no way it'll look like that. Personally, I love the cool angular look: it hearkens back to some of the older sci-fi stuff, but for some reason everybody wants everything super sleek and super smooth these days.

Also I would say there's no way that Sony would be stupid enough to make the next system with NO nubs when everybody has been clamoring for a second one. I would say that, but I've been surprised at the stupidity that Sony is capable of lately, which brings me to my next point:

I'm pretty sure the next psp will flop. Sony just doesn't have the same level of goodwill with their customer base that they used to. They've been charging too much (ps3, pspgo), not supporting enough (pspgo) and basically giving their customers the bird (no umd export to pspgo, removing otheros).

I might be wrong and the psp2 might be a commercial success, but I sure as hell won't be buying one.

wow, i know its a rumor but i thing it has all the things we could ever want...built in dual cameras, touchscreen, 3G!!! i just hope that they keep the wlan tho, cuz the 3g is gonna cost you a monthly payment or a data plan based on mb downloaded i guess... sounds too good to me, i hope it's true...and judging by the camera features i would say we would see a new chat system, maybe powered by sony, or i don't know but it would be nice to video chat using an e-mail account like hotmail messenger or yahoo etc...that would me cool!

I would just like to point out that a 4 core cell in the psp2 is Absolutely NOT going to happen. Dont believe me? IBM discontinued the cell processor quite some time ago. Google it see for your self.

My guess is that it will more than likely use some sort of modified or enhanced Texas Instruments OMAP processor. Due to the face that 90% of smart phones using them. Which makes it easy to acquire large quantity's of them at a low cost.

Aside from the PS, they have screwed up every console launch with overpriced hardware and crap launch titles, so why should this be any different, and besides, Nintendo have regained the handheld crown and the PSP/PSPGo have become wastes of space on retailers shelves, I know I'll be buying a 3DS first, PSP2 later.

Unless one of the launch titles is Wipeout or Ridge Racer, in which case forget the above and I'll be first in line! ;)

guys, enough with the "want sp2 emu NAO" comments, whether its on psp2 or on ps3, the fact is the ps2 is STILL selling, and as long as ps2 is selling, it would be a terrible idea business-wise to let two other systems play its games.
