River City Ransom 2 announced

Miracle Kidz, the developer behind such recent games as Downtown SMASH Dodgeball! announced today that they are releasing a sequel to River City Ransom in 2012.

The new game, titled Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari 2 in Japan, will be a direct sequel to the original Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari on the Nintendo Famicom, also known as River City Ransom and Street Gangs on the NES.

Miracle Kidz also announced that the new game will hit the PC and all major consoles, but details about a release on the Nintendo 3DS and Sony NGP were not given.

Since its release in 1989, River City Ransom has shot into cult status comparable to EarthBound and Duke Nukem 3D. The original developer of River City Ransom, Technos Japan, declared bankruptcy in 1996 and ran out of business. Just recently, a publisher called Million has purchased Technos Japan's IPs and has released new versions of their games, including Double Dragon Advance and Super Dodgeball Brawlers.

Expect more information to come out of this year's E3.
