Report: Console and PC gaming going up, portables going down |
Listed in: PSP, Wii, PS3, MMORPG, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, PC Gaming, iPhone Tags: NPD, study
Just last month, the NPD reported that handheld gaming is becoming increasingly popular with the younger generations. In the latest of their yearly study of gaming habits, however, data showed that it's the consoles and PC gaming that's moving up, while portable gaming hasn't been as hot.
The NPD had 18,872 respondents for the study, ages 2 and up, the average being at 32. Those younger than 13 were accompanied by a parent or guardian as the survey was administered. According to the findings, there's a 9% increase in console gaming compared to last year, while it's 6% up for PC gaming. The portables, unfortunately, suffered a 16% decline.
"With these kinds of shifts in the composition of the gaming consumer and changes in gaming behavior, it’s clear that the need to understand gamers and their purchase patterns remains critical information to those that develop, market and sell games," said Anita Frazier, industry analyst from the NPD Group.
If you're interested in getting down to the nitty-gritties and other little factoids, then you can check the PR sent out by the NPD.

As much as I love Crisis Core and I'm looking forward to Peace Walker and KH:BBS, they would all have fit better on a home console, while games like Lumines or Crush, Wipeout or Tekken: games that are more casual and less immersive and/or are good for quick multi-player bouts on your lunch break are more suited to the portable thing.
I don't wanna' say that making the blockbusters like CC, MGSPW, and KHBBS are a bad idea: there certainly is a place for them, and I'm happy to have them (or I will be when they come out), and it is pretty cool to be able to play a bunch of the old ps1 games on a portable... though I'll almost always play them on my ps3 instead. But they should be the exception; more devs should focus more on games that are quick and casual fun (but not TOO casual *cough* Wii *cough*), such as arcadey or puzzle-type games.
One last problem with the "big" portable games: they're never going to be as good as their console brethren. GoW on psp is watered down compared to GoW on ps3. It never even occurred to me to give the new Socom a try. Even MGS:PO is a watered down MGS, though, to be fair, watered down MGS is still a better game than most games' non-watered versions. In most cases, I just don't want to spend $40 on a watered down version of a game I already spent $60 on.

It just seems that there are more credible titles coming to consoles and PC than there are to handhelds.
It's always been that way.

......besides, how are you going to play Street Fighter using the controls (touchscreen or keypad) of a phone?

I don't play my consoles much. I guess it's because I'm too busy travelling around. Rock Band 2 is good but... I dunno. I must just prefer handhelds.

I have my DS, PSP, and iPod Touch.
I hardly play my consoles. I just love being in bed playing a handheld.

Dont hold your breath on that one.
I'm trying to think back and remember a time when they ever seemed to do that at all?!
Their MO seems to me to be more along the lines of randomly innovating, periodically catching the public's fancy with an innovation, attempting to pimp every last cent out of said innovation and ruining it.
Rinse and repeat for the last 50 and next 50 years.

i think no portables are better then a psp
if the sales went down
then that probably means people are either bored with the games for it
or they are asking too much for the unit
for the games that go with its value
something that will get attention towards the psp would be if they could play ANY and WHATEVER game they have in thier ps3 instead of just certain games
if it was possible for me to play god of war 3 on my psp while im at mcdonalds
then psp would actually be worth buying
also stop making generic looking games
all the talent sony has working for them and they still making shit games

remember the PSP is over 5 years old, back then in 2005, there were no smart phones with a 333mhz cpu in them, the PSP was the most powerful.
So that tells me that the new PSP2 is going to be even more powerful then any smart phone again, so if phones are now 1ghz speeds, then PSP2 will be 1.5ghz speed or more, just think about that.
