Report: Console and PC gaming going up, portables going down

psp_bJust last month, the NPD reported that handheld gaming is becoming increasingly popular with the younger generations. In the latest of their yearly study of gaming habits, however, data showed that it's the consoles and PC gaming that's moving up, while portable gaming hasn't been as hot.

The NPD had 18,872 respondents for the study, ages 2 and up, the average being at 32. Those younger than 13 were accompanied by a parent or guardian as the survey was administered. According to the findings, there's a 9% increase in console gaming compared to last year, while it's 6% up for PC gaming. The portables, unfortunately, suffered a 16% decline.

"With these kinds of shifts in the composition of the gaming consumer and changes in gaming behavior, it’s clear that the need to understand gamers and their purchase patterns remains critical information to those that develop, market and sell games," said Anita Frazier, industry analyst from the NPD Group.

If you're interested in getting down to the nitty-gritties and other little factoids, then you can check the PR sent out by the NPD.

Have you seen the portables we have right now? At least consoles are getting really good games!

Portables have been lacking blockbuster titles for some time now. Kingdom Hearts didn't cause a boom for PSP and neither did Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver for DS. I think it's the fact that these portable games are lacking what they were abundant in in the past: entertainment. Lately it's nothing but remakes and slight alterations to older games and giving them new titles. That's not what we want. We want games that have the same entertainment value they had back in the day at an affordable price. Forget this $40 a game crap, you can buy a console for the same price as a portable, get better games for it for the same price, and never ave to worry about WiFi connections.

I never really put my finger on it until I was reading this article (but before reading the comments). It seems to me that the problem is that they're trying to treat the portables the same way they treat home consoles. When I play a console game, I like to play Final Fantasy or Metal Gear and get completely wrapped up in the story and/or gameplay. If I'm playing a portable, it usually means I'm in the car with one earbud in and the other out so I can have a conversation with the other people in the car, or I'm at the dmv waiting for my number to be called, on the bus waiting for my stop, or on my lunch break or something. It's not the same environment and I can't do the full immersion thing that I would do with my ps3.

As much as I love Crisis Core and I'm looking forward to Peace Walker and KH:BBS, they would all have fit better on a home console, while games like Lumines or Crush, Wipeout or Tekken: games that are more casual and less immersive and/or are good for quick multi-player bouts on your lunch break are more suited to the portable thing.

I don't wanna' say that making the blockbusters like CC, MGSPW, and KHBBS are a bad idea: there certainly is a place for them, and I'm happy to have them (or I will be when they come out), and it is pretty cool to be able to play a bunch of the old ps1 games on a portable... though I'll almost always play them on my ps3 instead. But they should be the exception; more devs should focus more on games that are quick and casual fun (but not TOO casual *cough* Wii *cough*), such as arcadey or puzzle-type games.

One last problem with the "big" portable games: they're never going to be as good as their console brethren. GoW on psp is watered down compared to GoW on ps3. It never even occurred to me to give the new Socom a try. Even MGS:PO is a watered down MGS, though, to be fair, watered down MGS is still a better game than most games' non-watered versions. In most cases, I just don't want to spend $40 on a watered down version of a game I already spent $60 on.

The answer's simple.. Decent useable gaming phones then you more likely to play the thing if it's always with you.

# RE: ...jacobian91 2010-05-30 16:12
That's not the answer at all.

It just seems that there are more credible titles coming to consoles and PC than there are to handhelds.

It's always been that way.

The iPhone proves it is the answer because even though it is total crap as a gaming device you have everyone fighting to make games for it and try to surpass those limitations, people just expect handheld devices to do everything so you not carrying a load of other devices around so make a good gaming phone with all the features you expect from both and people will use it.

You may be right in that there's a market for it, but it would be the death of portable games. Oh sure, they'd thrive and there would certainly be money in it, but there would be no more good games. It's like saying that they should stop making nice restaurants because there's so many fast food places. Many of us would still prefer quality games over the convenience of having them on our phones.

......besides, how are you going to play Street Fighter using the controls (touchscreen or keypad) of a phone?

I'm not talking about phones as they are now i mean something half way between the Psp and a proper phone so you never feel you have to compromise one or the other, the problem is just the logistics of getting cell providers to accept them, and you will get a load of crappy games but sadly devices that do everything are the future, i mean go back 10 years and people would say it's ridiculous to have 1 device that does all this when you can show off loads of seperate devices, but the fact is the 1 for all device is the future and dedicated handhelds are already declining.

I'm playing my handhelds more and more this year. I've thrown too much time into Pokemon Heart Gold and Lunar Silver Star Harmony. Next week I might get Infinite Space and throw another 100 gaming hours onto my DS.

I don't play my consoles much. I guess it's because I'm too busy travelling around. Rock Band 2 is good but... I dunno. I must just prefer handhelds.

I always buy handhelds.

I have my DS, PSP, and iPod Touch.

I hardly play my consoles. I just love being in bed playing a handheld.

The quality of games on handheld consoles is low. Usually just gimmicky, casual games.

The Psp Go's completely irrelevant and has no impact on the handheld market except pissing the few people off that bought one, and hopefully it taught Sony a lesson to do some market research in future and give gamers some of what we want.

Dont hold your breath on that one.

I'm trying to think back and remember a time when they ever seemed to do that at all?!

Their MO seems to me to be more along the lines of randomly innovating, periodically catching the public's fancy with an innovation, attempting to pimp every last cent out of said innovation and ruining it.

Rinse and repeat for the last 50 and next 50 years.

create new games!
i think no portables are better then a psp
if the sales went down
then that probably means people are either bored with the games for it
or they are asking too much for the unit
for the games that go with its value
something that will get attention towards the psp would be if they could play ANY and WHATEVER game they have in thier ps3 instead of just certain games
if it was possible for me to play god of war 3 on my psp while im at mcdonalds
then psp would actually be worth buying
also stop making generic looking games
all the talent sony has working for them and they still making shit games

DUE to portable consoles being a little retarded in terms of hardware & technology, not to mention latest hardware on a console is the camera on the DSi, the PSP has a 333Mhz processor vs. the 800Mhz/1Ghz smartphones, c'mon Sony get beefed up!

The PSP is kinda outdated in terms of CPU power compared with todays smartphones, but look at the prices of iphones and new N series phones they have beefy CPU just the price is near $1k.

remember the PSP is over 5 years old, back then in 2005, there were no smart phones with a 333mhz cpu in them, the PSP was the most powerful.
So that tells me that the new PSP2 is going to be even more powerful then any smart phone again, so if phones are now 1ghz speeds, then PSP2 will be 1.5ghz speed or more, just think about that.

After the useless PsP Go and DS new Fat, I´m really not surprise that someone will choose a Wii or a Xbox360.
