The Wii may be small and a bit underpowered compared to the other two big consoles on the market, but it is as solid as a rock. Four years ago a lot of people dismissed its success as a fad that was bound to fade away in a couple of years and yet here it is, still lording it over the PS3 and Xbox 360 in terms of sales. The initial furor over the Wii has since quieted down, of course, but that just means it's easier to get one this holiday season if you kept getting greeted by "sold out" signs in the past.

One factor that puts the Wii over the other two consoles is accessibility. Hey, if even old folks can use it, so can you. Another selling point is the price. At US$ 199, it's pretty damn cheap, and there's no need to buy a lot of extra accessories like motion controllers or hard drives to further enhance the gaming experience since the new Wii bundles already come with the new Remote Plus controller that has an integrated Motion Plus add-on. The games are cheaper compared to new releases for the PS3 and Xbox 360, too.

Nintendo's first-party franchises are of course the stars of the Wii's software library, but Mario games weren't the only good releases for the Nintendo console this year. Here are a few that should make for great holiday gifts:

  • Metroid: Other M
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2
  • Kirby's Epic Yarn
  • Donkey Kong Returns
  • No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle
  • Monster Hunter Tri
  • NBA Jam

Heh, I actually bought my fiancee 2 of those PSP games for Christmas. But how come Dissidia is on there? That game was released last year, I believe.

No Golden Sun though? That's, pardon my internet, an epic fail right there.

How about controller replacements. Maybe pink ones for all the war gamers out there....
