The PSP continues to surge in Japan this week. Despite experiencing the biggest drop in sales, Sony's handheld registered another impressive week, moving 33,683 units. Nintendo's DSi and DSi LL line, filled out the top three spots with 22,301 and 21,777 units sold, respectively.

While the PSP holds first place in the individual list, the combined sales of the Nintendo’s DS line still tops the overall charts with 50,038 units combined for the week. Here's the Japanese software chart, for the week ending October 10 (as compared to last week):

  1. PSP: 33,683 (37,088)
  2. DSi: 22,301 (24,937)
  3. DSi LL: 21,777 (24,246)
  4. PS3: 19,948 (20,363)
  5. Wii: 12,158 (13,360)
  6. DS Lite: 5,960 (5,707)
  7. Xbox 360: 2,746 (2,769)
  8. PS2: 1,373 (1,247)
  9. PSP Go: 1,191 (754)

PSP 34.874
DS 50.038

EVEN if we take into consideration a +-5% it is VERY VERY CLEAR who the real winner is. Sony's handheld department has been f***** by Nintendo since 1989 and this is NOT about to change anytime soon.

As for the guy you posted this, congratulations you are retarded beyond repair.

Another victim of the numbers....You don't get it... Generally is DS that is outselling anything else... BUT when PSP goes top for two weeks ona row, you can see titles like " Keeps leading"..."most selling" blablabla... even that, the COMBINED sales are not lying, SONY is in trouble.

"You don't get it."

Oh yes I do, it's idiots like the one posting the above piece of news that wrote this highly unprofessional piece of crap since there may be people who have no idea what a DSi LL is. It is not even mentioned above that DS has a combined sales of 50k WELL AHEAD of the PSP. Even the title itself is just plain wrong.

By the way if sony are giving you free stuff, I wouldn't mind writing the same crap too (these are difficult times indeed)

I'm not trying to diminish Sony's success, but is it possible that the market is holding off for the 3DS? It's a real case where people stop buying the older models so they can just buy the newer one.

If not, then more power to Sony.

DS sales have slowed since the announcement of the 3DS. I guess since it has full backwards compatibility that people are prepared to wait.

True. Even I am looking forward to the 3DS and I am not a DS fan. I only hope by that time Sony announces a better PSP like a PSP2 with killer features to fend off the likelihood of people moving over. I still love my PSP though. ;-)

How do they even collect their data? Are their sources reliable? Are all retailers involved or just the major ones? How reliable is their data? Will indpendant studies reveal similar results?

Friggin MediaCreate. How do they work?

imagine the way poll data about political parties are taken but instead of randomly calling 1000 people, there are certain vendors who every week give their precise sales to media create and then based on this sample, using certain algorithms (userbase for every store etc) they calculate the total so no they did not count 50k DS sales but their numbers are pretty accurate.

Now if you know a bit more about statistics, you will know that there if they followed the usual protocols, there isa 95% chance of the actual sales number to exist within the margin of +- 2.5% (made a mistake on the post above) so for instance a number of 10.000, 2.5% is 250 so it can be anywhere between 9.750 and 10.250 (this assuming an even distribution which is not entirely true but they don't provide such data so this is the best we can do) so have that in mind every time you see two sets of date being very close together.

You do realize that crowing about the PSP is completely wrong, right? If you add up DSi, DSi LL and DSLite you get around 50k units, which kicks the pants off of PSP and PSP Go combined.

And well deserved.

PSP is a fine machine, better than the nintendo.

"better than the nintendo.'

no arguing there (though a good handheld has a respectable battery life as well) it is the GAMES where the PSP lacks in comparison to the DS mainly concerning original and exclusive software.

I think Sony should stop all PSP sales end this year, and shouf work on a hard comeback around November 2011 with the PSP2
