PS3 has biggest percentage of internet-connected consoles in the US |
Listed in: Wii, PS3, Xbox 360 Tags: study
The Wii, the Xbox 360, and the PS3 all have online capabilities. But according to this report, the PS3 has the biggest percentage of units that are connected to the internet.
Research firm The Diffusion Group polled 2,000 adult broadband users in the US and found that 78% of PS3 owners have their console hooked up with internet. The Xbox 360 follows with a close 73%, while the Wii barely jumps the halfway hurdle with 54%.
"Today's game consoles are increasingly connected to the internet, not just to enhance their gaming experience but to access the growing variety of online media-video," said Michael Greeson, Diffusion Group research director.
Online play is one thing, but there are many other features that can be accessed via broadband connection. Netflix is one thing, and the PS3's and Xbox 360's online stores provide various media content for their install base. The Diffusion Group noted that the consoles are "best positioned to become the first mainstream over-the-top (OTT) video delivery platform."

It is like 'unlocking' your console, like upgrading to premium. I cannot imagen my PlayStation 3 without PSN anymore..

So i get really disapointed when somebody won't sign up.
Here comes another of my opinions: The xbox 360 would have more people online if it could connect with a wireless router without the friggin' wireless thingy.
Reply
that way, more people can just steal it from unsecured routers. that would put the xbox percent to 80%

kidsbox and gaystation... sorry guys, but you need to grow up.
First off the ps3 is wireless so more people connect to the internet.
Second PSN is free so naturally more people would connect.
Third xbox live isn't free.
Fourth you have to buy a friggin' wireless adaptor thingy for 100 $. (Or buy a cable, over 3 meteres)
That's the factors, that is why more people connects to the internet.
But on the other hand, xbox live is better than PSN (this is my opinion, I own the ps3 and the xbox 360 btw).
And I prefer the xbox 360 and does that make me a fanboy?
"wow , what dumb argument ... those kidsbox fanboys are pathetic" stupid comment...
The xbox 360 and the ps3 shouldn't be referred to as Kidsbox and Gay Station 3.
And the definition of a fanboy is and I quote "A person that's way to devoted to a game, console, OS ,etc."
And gamesquest123 isn't a fanboy, he just tells us one of the reasons behind the perecentages.
Now you SuperQuest is more like a fanboy referring to the xbox 360 as a kidsbox.

the PS3 has good sales now, and they arent too far behind the 360. but its no big deal, many people have 360s to pirate games so yeah

1. "an awful lot of ps3's sold have been sold to organisations using them as cluster nodes"
umm lots of 360s were sold due to RROD. PS3 sold a lot for research AND way more content(if you don't agree your kidding yourself), Xbox360 sold a lot cause it came out earlier and had hardware failures. You fail #1
2."so i never trust any of these "stats" its all corprate bs that has been one sidedly organised from one of the makers to make there product seem superior personally i figure xbox 360 is most "used" for online purposes"
Corporate BS is a over-generalization. You may never trust them but they are a hell of a lot more credible than "personally i figure xbox 360 is most "used" for online purposes" also known as your BS. You fail #2
3. "but thats using logic and not pretending to have gathered stats"
wow I don't even have to say anything about this one. But in case you don't understand, this is a contradiction in your logic; logic is based on stats. A contradiction in one's own logic = failure and the pleasure to have people like rip you apart. You fail #3
If you don't want someone embarrassing you on the internet, at least make a somewhat sound argument with evidence/facts else people like me will be there to rip you a new one. Good-bye and wise-up next time.

Last gen, certain gamers claimed the PS2's higher sales were due to gamers buying 2 or more PS2s because of the DRE problem, but this was really just denial. A sale is a sale is a sale, and the PS2 sold more because it was more popular, the same applies to the 360. :)
Anyway, on a general point, some people seem to be reading more into these statistics than is actually there. It's the percentage of users of each console, so there isn't really a winner or loser here. If only 500 people bought a Wii and all 500 were online, then that would be 100% of Wii owners online!
We can interpret them another way. If we apply these percentages to US console sales from VGChartz (yes I know, don't say it :)), we get;
Wii = 17.77m users online (54% of 32.91m)
360 = 16.67m users online (73% of 22.84m)
PS3 = 10.65m users online (78% of 13.66m)
But whilst this may be interesting, it tells us nothing about HOW these gamers use their consoles online and for how LONG. So again, we shouldn't read too much into these figures.

The whole purpose of my rant was to point out all the flaws in his logic, not to argue which is the better console.

PSN is free online, which I'm sure is a huge incentive. If you've got a 360 and don't want to pay for XBL then there is no reason to connect at all. I know a few people that have never been on XBL with their 360s.
Microsoft is losing a lot of profit from them, and not only in the XBL $60 a year but piracy because they don't care about the online content that isn't free to begin with, so whether or not their Xbox detects it's been tampered with is no matter.

your comment = fail.

It sold like 1-2 Million more copies on the 360 than the PS3, so to say that piracy is 'causing Microsoft to loose money' would not be right to say.

PS3s do have a browser. It's not just limited to online gaming. Hence why more are connected to the internet.

But when that comes, we can play our pirated games online.
And yes you're right about the browser, and the pirating. So your post=Win

wonder a many silver account in that number for the 360 ... so another point for the PS3 ...

so I don't get where fanboysm fits into that lol.
as it stands the ps has more functionality and reasons to be online than the others the other two are gradually gaining more online features this is obvious.
then you have to consider things like the chances that each console owner is tech savvy. the xboxers and the ps3ers are more likely to be tech savvy than the wiiers. so that is a reason that the wii lags so far behind.
there are so many factors the arise that may determine why a console is or isn't connected to the net. Arguing about why a particular console is used online more is really pathetic.
Any way the survey seems to have been done to assess consumer trends in relation to downloading video content and the suitability of consoles in changing the way content is viewed.
the whole ps3, xbox, wii issue is just a by-product of that investigation. It does't tell you if the number of people that were interviewed that had the relevant consoles where equal. It just says that they asked 2000 broadband users (who happened to own a ps3xboxwii) and out of the ones who did they got that percentage. they didn't ask 2000 gamers with broadband connection whether they had their consoles hooked up to the net.
another attempt to stir up the console war... = epic fail

Lower Price packages target lower income families = less likely to have internet connections.

For one, the 360 still has more users online, at somewhere around 16,000,000. The PS3 has the smallest amount of users in total, at around 10,000,000. The Wii has the most, at around 17,000,000. It's not just about percentages here.
But this isn't saying much either. PS3 has free online, and fantastic online at that. That's why a larger percentage of their OWN users have online, it's free, and it's a hella fun.
I think this percentage would keep up if the install base got higher. In fact, I think that if the install base surpasses the 360, the online percentage will be much higher, due to free online and built in wifi.
But hey, I'm no analyst, I'm just the 180 pound Bioengineer in the room.

Additionally, they asked "2,000 adult broadband users". That means they already have a broadband connection, and thus, they are more likely to connect their consoles, too.
The real numbers are probably way below that. Or do you really think that over 50% of the Wii owners are connected to the internet? Get Real. A lot of people bought the Wii because of Wii Sports and they don't have a fucking clue how to connect a PC to the internet yet alone the Wii.
