PlayStation 2: ten years old and still selling

Today, March 4th, is another special day for Sony. It was on this day, ten years ago, that the PlayStation 2 was launched in Japan.

It's been a decade since then, but we can still see games being released for the PS2, and the console even outsold the PSP Go on some occasions. The PS2 continues to receive support, and in fact, was officially released in Brazil just last November, and in Vietnam in January of this year.

At the end of September 2009, the PS2 has sold 140 million units worldwide.

Oh the good old days - PlayStation 2 had so many classics in its lineup, and even ran PSone games to boot. A milestone well-deserved. Happy Birthday PS2!

LOL they wrote "the console even outsold the PSP Go on some occasions", some occasions meaning always or PSP Go meaning just PSP. At least some proofreading to avoid very obvious facts. Anyway, I partly abandoned emulation and bought a PS2 last year, no wonder why it has sold so many units, great console.

I agree they are starting to do a good job with it but it took 3 years, a price cut and the replacment slim model to get there, PSN is only just starting to be a valid option against opposition, all it had was the fact it is free but they still have a lot of work to do.

The continued success of the PS2 is actually quite a problem for the PS3, and is both a cause and symbol of it. If the PS3 was as good as the PS2 then everyone would have moved on. but because the PS3 was such a failure and is only just starting to improve now - customers and devs stick with the older, more reliable system.

lol the statement the ps3 is a failure is a conclusion as it is still being made and is still supported at most it could only be a dissapointment. but the other stuff you said is right

the price is the main issue and always has been. the removal of BC was also another blow... a bit stupid if you ask me. the whole point is to convert your ps2 following into a ps3 following and the ps2 following is F*cking huge why on earth would you remove BC.

In fact BC was the reason that i bought my ps3. I was 100hrs into final fantasy 12 with my ps2 which still works but is a pain to get working so I bought a ps3 to avoid the hassle. I feel sorry for those with non BC ps3's.

oh and the ps3 is better but its even better with BC

Sony should have discontinued the ps2 a year after the ps3s lauch. And i hope sony dont release the next playtation until 2013(earliest). oh that's a personal topic. i think a few decent games came out later after all. devil summoner 2 and mana khemia 2 are among my favorites, dating from 2009. persona 3 and 4 also came out after 2006-2007.

i don't really care about latest and greatest games and consoles that much. new kids can have their ps3 or equivalent consoles. this is after my time.

i've spent a lot of time with various ps2 games, and i'm not finished yet ;)

Agreed, fucking electronic losers I have had my PS3 since launch upgraded the hard-drive to 500G now it stores movies and I PWN on BFBC2 after 3 years still going strong.

A flawed but sturdy and reliable little guy.

With a good modchip I feel in no hurry to upgrade to the ps3 until they get it cracked.

I have to say though i've had my Xbox 1 for over 7 years and it still reads anything i put in it but i'm on my 3rd Ps2 which right now is starting to spit it's dummy when i try to play backups, personally i prefer the Xbox because it's basically just a Pc and repairs are easy where the Ps2 everything is custom built and when it goes wrong it will probably just get binned and get another.

I wouldn't say the ps2 destroyed the xbox in graphics... And even though the ps2 did dominate the hell out of last gen consoles, this gen wouldn't be the same without the original xbox coming into play. >.>

As long as people keep buying the PS2, it will still be made and sold. Sony has no reason to stop selling it, other than when the time comes that PS3 is just as cheap! If you go to Japan you can still buy new Sega Megadrive systems, so why not keep making the PS2? I'm pretty sure sales-wise it's the most successful game console of all time, if not one of the most successful pieces of consumer electronics...

Yes. That faithful day 10 years ago. I actually got mine from a Duty-Free shop in the airport... Only to realize several years later that I'd end up buying 6 more of the same console! But well worth it. I actually still have mine hooked up with HDLoader

Now that was true power. To play full games off a computer hard drive, in the days when games on consoles had a memory card as the only other storage device... Good days I tell you.

The reason why Playstation 3 cannot play PS2 games is because Sony chose it not to. Of course. The playstation 2 is still selling well, so why would Sony even need to put it on ps3 when it is selling better than the PSPGo? This is the true reason for PS2 games not being available on PS3.

It's PS2, the console that will never die! Unfortunately, the PS3 is inferior to the XBOX 360 where PS2 killed the original XBOX. Not graphics wise, but the vast library of blockbuster games for it. Games make a console. The PS3 has a complete lack of awesome exclusives where the exclusives for the XBOX 360 are amazing, Halo and such.

The PS2 was a beautiful thing that dominated the original XBOX, not because of performance, but just because of the excellent game library. However the XBOX 360 completely kills the PS3. The XBOX has a wealth of amazing exclusive titles that the PS3 lacks. Not to mention XBOX live is amazing.vseqa
