Pachter: Kinect and Move "shortage" just a ruse to spur demand |

Both Sony and Microsoft's respective motion techs have already been released. In a move that's not all too surprising, both companies are also harping on the supposed threat of supply shortage for Move and Kinect. If there's one person not buying this doomsday prophecy, however, it's none other than Michael Pachter. It's all hogwash, he cries.
"Yes, I think both companies would very much like for consumers to believe that their devices are highly sought after and difficult to obtain. That usually works to spur demand."
He supported this theory with simple math, making an example out of Sony's unspectacular sales numers of Move, particularly in Europe and North America. "Sony shipped 2.5 million units in the US and Europe, and their sales are nowhere near that level, so I'm not sure how they can reconcile the fact that units shipped far exceed units sold."
As for Microsoft, you'll remember that a company exec recently warned of shortage of supply for Kinect, so much so that you probably won't be able to pick up one if you wait till Christmas. "I do think that Microsoft is managing supply a bit better, and keeping standalone Kinect supply tight to make sure that there is a steady supply through Christmas," was Pachter's analysis of the Kinect situation.
"They have shipped a lot of console bundles, to ensure that the eBay price doesn't get above US$ 300 for the standalone unit, but supply of the standalone remains tight." He also said that Sony's probably going by the way of this same strategy, focusing on bundle supply and keeping tight control of standalone Move controllers.

Around my neck of the woods Kinect is sold out, good luck finding any and PS Moves are all over the place.
It just depends on your region.
I don't have a 360 anymore yet I bought a Kinect just to play with on my PC. Pretty cool device!
