Pachter: Kinect and Move "shortage" just a ruse to spur demand

Ó

psmoveBoth Sony and Microsoft's respective motion techs have already been released. In a move that's not all too surprising, both companies are also harping on the supposed threat of supply shortage for Move and Kinect. If there's one person not buying this doomsday prophecy, however, it's none other than Michael Pachter. It's all hogwash, he cries.

"Yes, I think both companies would very much like for consumers to believe that their devices are highly sought after and difficult to obtain. That usually works to spur demand."

He supported this theory with simple math, making an example out of Sony's unspectacular sales numers of Move, particularly in Europe and North America. "Sony shipped 2.5 million units in the US and Europe, and their sales are nowhere near that level, so I'm not sure how they can reconcile the fact that units shipped far exceed units sold."

As for Microsoft, you'll remember that a company exec recently warned of shortage of supply for Kinect, so much so that you probably won't be able to pick up one if you wait till Christmas. "I do think that Microsoft is managing supply a bit better, and keeping standalone Kinect supply tight to make sure that there is a steady supply through Christmas," was Pachter's analysis of the Kinect situation.

"They have shipped a lot of console bundles, to ensure that the eBay price doesn't get above US$ 300 for the standalone unit, but supply of the standalone remains tight." He also said that Sony's probably going by the way of this same strategy, focusing on bundle supply and keeping tight control of standalone Move controllers.

I know for a fact that Amazon is shipping Kinects out as fast as they come in. On the other hand, Moves are a dime a dozen. Just based on sales at my facility alone, Kinect is outselling Move by leaps and bounds.

No surprise xbot as Kinect was just released. Give it a few months and all the fitness Mom's and kids will have their units and demand will drop. Both of these devices will end up collect dust. Look at most of the latest Wii games, they all emphasize classic control.

I'm talking since release. Moves are slow to sell, even out of the gate. Kinects sell as fast as they come in. Its fact. I own a PS3. Just got one actually cuz my 360 died... again. Xbot?!?! Think not. Booyah Grandma! Booyah...

It's so funny to see all the post from the xbox fanboys, Kinect sold out here and their and Sony Moves left All over at all Stores and the real truth is that it's all Lies, Moves sales are very high and you have no proof otherwise.

Now our old Friend Patch has a very Bad Recird at his guessing game he plays, yes he guesses for a living so all you Fanboys don't get so excited the early returns of Kinect are also at 22% Due to space issues and other concerns.

I'm surprised anyone listens to that knucklehead patcher anymore.

Around my neck of the woods Kinect is sold out, good luck finding any and PS Moves are all over the place.

It just depends on your region.

I don't have a 360 anymore yet I bought a Kinect just to play with on my PC. Pretty cool device!
