Nintendo's thinking of charging for their online services - Miyamoto

Some four years after it was officially launched, Nintendo is just now considering the concept of charging a fee for their online service. They're thinking of strengthening their foothold on this channel, and they know they're gonna need funds to do that.

Shigeru Miyamoto, in an interview with Edge, explains this change of heart:

"Probably the other thing that we are desperate to realize is the core [online] business structure. Do we need to demand customers to pay monthly fees to enjoy online activities? Or give an online subscription that is free of charge, but then offer something extra for people that pay, so that they could get some extra value? With these core business strategies, I think we are less active than we should be."

But although the Senior Managing Director for Nintendo conceded that they have not been very proactive on addressing issues pertaining to the MMORPG genre, he did say in defense that where they did have online features implemented, they make sure it's "where we can provide our customers with more fun and entertainment."

Man, Nintendo really screwed up online this generation...

You'd think they would have fixed the online stuff a little earlier.. instead of.. ya know.. releasing the wii in new colors.

-_-

What, the Wii has online that isn't pay to use? The only online my wii seems to have is downloading games, which you have to pay for...

Theres online games for the wii worth paying for now? I missed the memo... shit...

I know one game with online play, Monster Hunter, which I'd never pay for the online play of.

So go ahead nintendo, you'll see your playbase drop even more, you guys have really fucked up with this generation of games consoles...

I've been playing Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Conduit and Monster Hunter online.... there are more game also, but I do not really own them... so yes, there are games worth playing online.... and all for free, so I don't know where you're living if mario kart online isn't free for you, but it sure ain't this world.

If sony and nintendo start charging for the online aspect, the people to blame are the IDIOTS that payed for xbl all this time!

But isn't that what business is? You provide a service, and your customers pay for it. If they provided additional benefits that were truly worth some extra $$ then that's fine, but to charge for basic game play online is ludicrous (that's you microsoft). Sony has been toying with the idea of a pay service for additional online stuff (think silver and gold levels from ms, but silver can still play online for free). A company has to make a buck to continue putting products out and paying for their services they offer customers.

Sony and Nintendo are doing you a favor in having free online services... which is one of the two main reasons i dont have an Xbox nor do i want one [ the other reason is , red rings are running crazy one the xbox, my brother got it 3 times and he got his xbox in december ] .. Sonic doesnt like red rings .. maybe Knuckles does but Sonic prefers his rings Golden..

If they would just not set up the stupid rules they have. Wanna know something? Third parties are not allowed to have a chat/keyboard like function in wifi DS games. It's a rule nintendo made. There are loopholes (like Phantasy Star 0, where they have a scribblepad thing) but otherwise?

Also, voice chat isn't allowed either on third party games for the Wii AND DS, I think.

If they just got rid of those, I'm sure more gaming companies would be willing to make things a little more wifi-ish. :v

Really? No, Sorry Nintendo you're online service is to sh*tty to even pay ANYTHING for. Friends codes are awful, (Im aware that there used to protect kids) but it's just a pain in the ass. The online games left that are active seem to be Mario Kart, Smash Bros, and music games. Otherwise the only reason it'd be used is the Wii shop channel If they charge for that then that's dumb.

Boy, sensationalist replies to sensationalist title. It appears Miyamoto is finally deciding online stuff is truly important, and trying to decide what kind of plan they would have for a FUTURE service. Not what they have right now. Kinda late to the party, but mulling over the options doesn't automatically mean we will pay, and if we do pay that it'll stay the same as it is right now.

I wouldn't use it again even though it's free! Theres like 3 games that actual online PLAY on the wii (not just uploading scores) , and its sh*t. Laggy, filled with glitches and bugs, and no one plays it. I almost hope that Nintendo charges for the online service. Hopefully that will cause the last few dozen stupid nintendo users to finally get a real game console.

even more reason to never update my wii And leave it with the HBC installed. I left my wii unplugged for a year and only just hooked it up again for monster hunter tri. Oh well If they actually released "good" game/channels/anything I could really get behind the wii but as is its a nice parlor trick to show your friends when they come over *waggle waggle*
