Ninja Theory explains Dante's new look

A while back, developers from Ninja Theory talked about the new direction they've taken the franchise to. Fans, however, are a little more interested in why they decided to take the hero from the decade-old franchise and turn him into...something else. Here's what they have to say about it.

At any rate, if you're one of those who're not quite impressed with Dante's makeover, just remember that inFamous fans got Sucker Punch to ditch pretty-boy Cole for something more familiar. Maybe Capcom will heed a similar clamor?

I'm loving the new Dante myself. It'd be awesome if in some twist we found out this guy isn't actually Dante but some poor kid who's been the victim of brainwashing like Olivia Dunham was on Fringe recently, but either way I'm loving the character design.

First of all, to anyone calling him emo; he doesn't even emo. He's a 21st century punk. In the 90s it was all about the mohawk, and now it's a face obstructing fringe. Times change, your fucking glory days are over, get over it.

Secondly, emo implies that he's whining and crying and cutting himself over rejections, yet in the trailer I see a bad ass burning the eyes out of demons using cigars and throwing cars at his enemies just because he can. The vibe he's giving off is eerily similar to Spike from BtVS, and right now the only issue I take to his design is his Hayter-esque gravelly voice. It doesn't suit him, and they better fix that.

Before anyone brings up fucking Twilight again like some idiot did further down the page, may I ask how licking the ass of a video game character who looks like a failed Sephiroth wanna be is supposed to be cool?

Yes he was born with silver hair and blue eyes; these characteristics are genetics and he was born with it. Read the canonized Devil May Cry novels; you'll see that both the twins, Dante and Vergil, were naturally born with blue eyes and silver hair.

Agreed, DMC 1 and 3 where easyly the best. DMC 2 sucked and i felt 4 was boring. The anime was decent but it could've been better. For starters, Imfamous 2 is a sequel, the redesign made no sense, DMC was supposed to be a reboot until all of you fuckign fanboy started bitching and moaning so they changed it into a prequel.

Yes, FINALLY, someone understands! Character Design is important, BUT, you have to learn how to change it too! All these guys complaining are the real people that have no knowledge of a Game's art. Especially the guy that said that. The Twilight and Emo stuff is soo annoying. What if those two things never existed? What would they be calling it?

This game looks like it has potential. No one also complained when they changed Ryu's Look every game... (Oh...did no one know that? I guess it was the fact that they gave him the same get up, but changed his physical features all the time...oh gawd, especially the hair).Sigh, but as it has been said before by my roommate, "Game fans are a 2 edged blade. The one facing forward, are the fans that are truly with you in improving your games be the best, and they will not hold you back. The other, facing back towards you, are the fans that try their best to keep you from going forward"... but... right now, DMC needs to move forward. DMC turning into a prequel is evident that complaining "fans" (because you guys are the fakest fans of this series ever), can actually hurt the game development. Good job whiners! Game Designers are indeed humans, and if they see their fans being ungrateful, they will get pissed off, and punish you. Meaning, there could never be another DMC again..even WITH old Dante...

I seriously don't get this, everyone's saying that Dante doesn't look cool or doesn't look tougher, even though he does.

Dante looked like a flaming gay man putting his best suit on, he appealed to metrosexual Japanese aesthetics, which everybody usually hates, he looks like an idealized J-Pop star. Now they make him look like a punk rocker (which, compared to a J-pop star still looks cool).

Is he not acting as tough then? Yes he is, he's pulling off the same moves Dante pulled and more, he's not as mellow as Dante, he doesn't seem like he's a smooth talker and I honestly get a more sadistic vibe from him, y'know, LIKE A DEMON!?

So he's not the same Dante, true. And he's not the same badass as before, also true. But instead he could be a different kind of badass, yet all I hear is "WAAH! it's not the same thing as the last four games!!"

Was that even made in-house though? All of Capcom's major franchises have been outsourced to other companies for development lately (Dinks for SF4/SSF4, Ninja Theory with DMC, etc.), a big reason why none of the newer games are as good as their older counterparts. Is anyone going to argue that RE5 wasn't anywhere near as good as RE4 or the RE1 remake?

I have to say the new Dante looks like a faggot, just as much as the guy in the interview with the Flaming Apple tattoo.
If you've ever seen Versus, the Main Character was the Archetype for Dante, which Ryuhei Kitamura designed. Reboots are all good and fine, but they are removing a core fundamental to the DmC Franchise. Good on Capcom for choosing Selma Blair with a Hysterectomy for the character model... thats a good way to scare off any player base.

To the Author, I have to mention Sucker Punch still isn't bringing old Cole McGrath back. All they're doing is making a happy medium between both looks. The fact is, his voice will not be the old one so he'll still be different.

As for new dante: Has anyone not read or heard of the DMC Manga when he was under the alias of Tony Redgrave? Cause that's exactly where this change is coming from; So this is nothing more but a prequel to DMC3

I REALLY wanna know where we can go to complain about this. I will not stand for this new Dante, and for all you emo homos calling us fanboys for not liking this change, let me just explain this: There are 4 games, a manga, an anime, countless merchandise, and even Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is using the OLD Dante. If they change him now, they are basically throwing ALL of that out the window and starting from scratch. No one is gonna recognize this as a DMC game and I PRAY TO GOD that they change him back, make this a prequel (where he stops smoking, gets grey hair, starts being a smart ass again, and gets buff again turning into the Dante we all know and love) or just make this another independant game. Devil May Cry: The NOT Dante story would be fine. Just please Capcom, if you read this, appeal to 90% of your fans and change him back. I beg of you.

All of these are opinions, to say "He really does look tougher" or "He really does look cool" are just opinions, and it is my opinion that if this is the character they plan to release, the series will be marred by this game. Similarly to what I feel happened to the Resident Evil Series when 4 and 5 were added. In my eyes, only 3 Devil May Cry games have existed, and only 2 of them were "good". Devil May Cry 4's demo was enough for me to decide I would not purchase the game.

Okay, when it comes to the DMC series, I'm pretty much on the fence. Fair enough, the new Dante does look like a bit of a pussy, but in my opinion I think he still looks pretty kool. As long as the gameplay is as good if not better than the last few games, I'll buy it. But I am with the fans of the old, this isn't Dante. Like the clothes, don't like the smoking, the hair, the face, the build, anything else lol. But at the same time, as much as people are saying there's manga, etc all using the old Dante, we already knew that this was going to be a prequel, and I think the reason why they recreated him was to possibly show a completely different younger Dante, like a "what if" scenario (hopefully). Even if this game is a flop, a) I'm going to own it, because it is DMC, and b) it's a prequel, so chances are we won't need to worry about them making another game with this Dante in it = ) lol

The OLD Dante was pretty lame, though he got alot better in the 4th game. The NEW Dante looks like a K-pop B!TCH in my opinion. The new look suits the new generation of gamers who are generally Justin Biebers hitting puberty....yup, I'm part of the last decent generation...

Well if its ok to change characters we love then next mario game that comes out make it a FPS with a dead space scenario where mario has futuristic armor and then take batman and give him fairy wings and a gun and have him go on a killing spree like some gta type stuff then take Kratos from god of war make him an angry chinese midget who is mad at egyptian gods then turn yoshi into a cow then turn spiderman into antman with his special power being he can carry bad guys twice his size and give them all gay flippy hair oh and turn GTA5 into a rated E game where you cant kill people or drive heck just turn GTA to batman and batman to GTA why not its fine to completely change things we know and love from what most people here are saying hell last of all turn world of warcraft into a final fantasy game and turn all the WOW people to final fantasy characters and make the world smaller and turn call of duty into battlefield and battlefield into call of duty hell lets do away with video games period and turn them all into movies sounds GREAAAAT (frosted flakes) lol im just sayin

U lot talking of a blond guy definatly did not play DMC he has silver white hair fuck tarts, and i agree when u started to play with a character why the fuck change him to look like a druggy wtf, he looks like every junky sitting on the conner now and FYI I have the game he not sharp and with his comes backs and what not he sucks fucking ass point.
