A lot has been said about mobile gaming. Some console giants have admitted it presents stiff competition. Others have been quite vocal about what they perceive as the dangers cheap games pose to the console gaming industry. When it comes down to the numbers, research firm Nielsen says that gamers spent less on console and other non-mobile releases in 2010 while spending more on mobile games.

"Public data shows that game sales at retail decreased slightly in 2010, and, according to Nielsen’s recently released 360° Gaming Report, so did gaming’s share of entertainment spending per household," reads part of the report. Nielsen also notes that compared to 2009, the household leisure budgets amoung video game buying homes increased by 9 percent in 2010.
Despite the increased budget, the research firm's latest report shows that 2010 saw a decrease in a household's gaming budget from 9.3 percent to 8.5 percent. The amount spent per household on cellular entertainment, on the other hand, rose from 5.3 percent to 7.4 percent.
The actual amount of money spent on video games in 2010, however, was found to be "nearly even" with that spent in 2009. Gaming-related purchases also remained at a higher percentage compared to other forms of TV-based entertainment.
