2. Other game-related records

The press release also speaks of feats from the Brits, like Ryan Hart from Croydon, who has the most consecutive wins against human opponents in Street Fighter IV with 169. Chris Givern from West Sussex spent 13hours 33minutes 56seconds to secure the record for longest session in a dance game, and actor Christopher Lee is the oldest voice actor in a video game, who was 87 when he worked with Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days last year.

Other records include the video game with the most swearing, which went to 2005's PS2 title Scarface, which earned its 18+ rating with over 5,000 expletives. A crowd of 10,490 in Los Premios 40 Principales, Madrid, Spain, became the largest to sing to a karaoke video game, while the most popular Facebook game went to Farmville, with over 60 million active users monthly.

Then in a poll with over 13,000 respondents, Mario was voted the "best video game character" of all time with over 10% of the total votes. Link from The Legend of Zelda came in second, while Halo's Master Chief took third. Nintendo had the most characters in the top 50 of that list with eleven, while Sony took second with six. Capcom got third with five.

“It’s been another great year for gaming, with incredible records broken by players from all walks of life," noted Gaz Deaves, Guinness World Records gaming editor. "Gaming has become a hugely important part of popular culture and this year’s Gamer’s Edition reflects just that”.

There's more where those came from, and you can get a copy of Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2011 for just US$ 8.35 at Amazon.

"BEST video game character of all time" will always be subjective. having a record like that up there discredits them, and even more so to decide it with a poll.

I totally agree with you.

The fact that Master Chief is on there, and above Pac-Man even, tells a lot about the demographics. How many Master Chief TV series and products are there... compared to Pac-Man merchandise? How many sequels and spin-offs?

I guess there can never be a better character than Mario in future games. After all, it was "of all time".

It should be common knowledge that awards cater to the lowest denominator!

The closest you could ever get to the award meaning anything would be identifying the voters specifically, IE:
"Woman gamers",
"18-25 gamers",
"purchases",
etc.

"The best", or "The Favorite", or "murika's favorite" is only so much propaganda and idol making.

95 percent of the best selling games have nothing to do with the best made games!

These guys are losers.

I could beat gramps in Wii Bowling easy
Gutiar Hero is a joke of a game to begin with so like I give a crap about that.

I could beat more human people in Street Fighter IV if I even liked the game which I don't. I kick ass at it and have never been beaten by anyone, still hate it though.

Notice that it said "In a row". So you could beat over 169 real-live players in a row?

:D Yeah take black ops for example. FAIL

It may of sold a lot of copies but it's poorly made game. Sure the single player is ok but multi sucks. Washed out graphics, dodgy sounds. I mean come on it's like playing cod3 again.
