NES also celebrates 25th birthday

nesbMario isn't the only one turning 25 this year. Also making the jump into a quarter century of age is the Nintendo Entertainment System, simply called the NES. 25 years ago today, the NES was launched in the United States and subsequently gave some of us a childhood of video games.

 

Looking back, the NES had a few of the strongest launch titles in gaming history, a list that includes Excitebike, Baseball, and of course, Duck Hunt. The console enjoyed ten long years in the market until it was phased out in 1995. By that time, the NES already immortalized names that still command respect and attention to this day - Zelda, Mario, Metroid, to name a few.

I have the cartridge somewhere too, and I used to play it all the time through animal crossing. I think my first game was smb 2.

how can mario and the NES both be 25? donkey kong came out in 1980, an that was mario's first game.

At that point, he was Jump Man, and not known as Mario by anyone, including Miyamoto. Mario, as he is known today, was born in 1985.

Ahh the good old days... Pointing the Zapper at the light bulb to cheat on Duck Hunt, and games so difficult by the time you left home you have remnants of at least 3 consoles embedded in your bedroom wall in frustration. I still have my 23 year old NES and apart from a missing flap it still fires up everytime after 10 minutes of contact blowing.

Yeah you never tried the Nes zapper bulb trick? When you play duck hunt all there is is a white rectangle around the duck when you pull trigger, and the sensor in gun just detects light or dark so knows when you hit light box and you get a hit everytime.
