After the events of Final Fantasy XIII, it's not the happy ending that was seemingly shown. A certain event emotionally scars the group, and you will see Lightning and company try and cope with it.

Unlike the previous direct sequel, XIII-2 will not have a "go along your merry way" theme. In fact, it's quite the contrary. It'll be notably darker and have a more serious tone to the story than that of X-2. This game will start in Cocoon's fallen, crystallized state, and Toriyama notes a more mysterious outlook from that point on.
In Final Fantasy XIII, you learned about Lindzei, how he created Cocoon, and why he is despised in all of Gran Pulse. In XIII-2, you'll encounter an entity called Etro, which will have as big an impact in the game's story just as Lindzei did in the previous game.

i'm also pretty psyched about the new travel system and the world full of people. i really hope it's a lot less linear this time

The length of time needed the last time definitely has something to do with the 360 version.
