Peter Molyneux has high hopes for gaming's future thanks to the rapid innovations we're now seeing. According to him, we might even see the birth of new genres in the near future.

Speaking to Gamasutra, Molyneux pointed towards three sides that bolster his belief: innovative game control systems spearheaded by console manufacturers, rapidly growing online social spaces, and developers themselves who want to give gamers more emotional experiences.

"There's a lot of forces all coming together at once," said Molyneux. "The hardware manufacturers have really realized, 'Look, if we really want to revolutionize things, it's not about faster processors and more memory. It is actually about things that are being held in the player's hands.

"And then you've got the side where, at last, we're starting to get what online really means," he added, talking up the "digital relationship" cooperative features in Fable III.

"Thirdly, you've got us as software engineers and designers and creators actually saying, 'Hey, we can make emotional experiences," he said. "Games like Heavy Rain give you a true emotional roller coaster ride."

Molyneux believes that when we get used to these three innovative approaches, we'll probably see new genres "in two to three years' time."

Molyneux doesn't always deliver, but I gotta give him props for being a visionary.

I disagree with him. As development cost increases not too many devs will try to risk on new formulas. GT had an episode where they talked to the guy in charge of ME and Dragon Age and he said it cost more money to do all those multiple story path. Not to mention that not every single one of those make into the game.

The PS2's processor was called "Emotion Engine" so it's already been done.

I am a fan of Lionhead, but Peter almost always talks big and can't deliver.

It's just me or Molineux really loves Heavy Rain? I'm not gonna get into the better hardware vs innovation stuff. I think games still need to be worked on story line, better A.I.(no cheating AI), physics, openness, etc. I think Graphics is not such a mayor issue this gen, as it has been in others.

Wow, I mean, this is absolutely unique, because it's entirely different from what the Japanese have been doing with VN's for the LAST DECADE.

The only real difference is that Heavy Rain is in 3D, and was sold in the US. Seriously...

Old Molyneux looks like current day Iannucci.

He's right though. The early days of N64 and PS1 were littered with experimental titles and genres.
