Lenovo making its own videogame console for China

Chinese PC maker Lenovo has announced plans to develop its own video game console for the Chinese market. The new platform's name, EBox, not only invokes images of Microsoft's own Xbox and Xbox 360 consoles, it will also come with a proprietary Kinect-like control scheme that will recognize shapes and movement without the need for a controller.

A 40-strong team of engineers was spun off Lenovo earlier this month to create Eedoo Technology, the firm tasked with development of the Ebox. The console is expected to make its debut this November and hit the market by the first quarter of 2011. A price point has yet to be nailed down a bit lower but Lenovo estimates it to be a bit lower than the US$ 300 Xbox 360.

Eedoo Technology boss Jack Luo believes they will be "the world's second company to produce a controller-free game console, behind only Microsoft." The EBox won't aspire to HD-level graphics and hardcore gameplay, however, with Eedoo following Nintendo's more casual-centric gameplan for the Wii.

"Our product is designed for family entertainment. EBox may not have exquisite game graphics, or extensive violence, but it can inspire family members to get off the couch and get some exercise," Luo said. He believes they will be able to sell more than 1 million EBoxes annually after the first two to three years.

The EBox will come bundled with around 30 games. Sixteen "global video game developers" have reportedly already signed on to develop games for it.

Just about time to announce a WHOLE CONSOLE, when there are already very big things going on SONY is being pushed like never. And people will love it for sure, it will be cheap, not better than ps3 or xbox360, tOTALLY user-Friendly.

I guess they will start it in China and then OPEN it for the ROTW.

wow. Lenovo should be a little smarter than that. Who in China is gonna drop $300 on a video game console? They have no US market due to the fact that it's a knock off of pre-existing technology. Really it's just a bad idea - imo they should find a decent and original idea (or at least one thats not currently being used) and launch into the gaming industry to right way. Just my two cents.

here we go again the whole gaming industry is built like that wii-mote -> ps move/ ps eye-> kinect. vertical consoles/ horizontal consoles. so it isnt because it is a knock off... lol. the problem is that their name may not carry that much clout outside of china. everyone knew who sony and microsoft were before they even released a console. therefore people will be more cautious in investing in this.

i think they will probs have more sucess than microsoft have in china its pretty much well know china only likes chineese stuff and anything from america especially is like some sort of devil device wich only shady odd balls would own over there, probs due to the governments over bearing control over everyone's way of life over there its eigther fit in or get toothpicks in your neck and die, as proven by their very own soldiers

THATS why it will sell. PS3 and Xbox 360 are not available there. They are well cut off from the rest of the globe (very horrible things are going on there that western media never touches upon) Hell they can't even acces YouTube unless they use proxys.

To be honest, I'm getting tired of gaming consoles but since they can be used for other things other than games it's cool.

Even before consoles come out their hardware is already passed out.

Good idea if they are using old and cheap tech, to sell something "new" under $100 amrite?? China is pretty big market IF you sell at the right price, the consumer power is low there ( consider ALL China at once ), so you need to adjust your offers..
