According to the Sony exec, the NGP was not only developed to be their new platform. Apart from their own Sony Worldwide Studios, they also got input and feedback from third party developers as well in building their next-gen portable.
Going further, Hirai also mentioned that the NGP is meant for the long haul. He didn't mentioned any number of years, but I think it's safe to say we can expect some longevity from such powerful piece of hardware. This, he says, would bring more value to the customer.
Kind of brings us back to the topic of pricing that they're still not talking about. But when Sony talks "more value" with a long lifespan, we're right back to thinking how expensive this would be.

I have a feeling it will cost the same if not more than the slim ps3. I mean just looking at the specs and their "understandable price" @_@
If its the same as the 3DS, Then I am sold lol

Cause they didn't reach the mass production stage yet. They would have an estimated price from the beginning of the project, but the aim is to go lower than that.
I think the plan is still going on, recently Sony bought back the factory producing 'Cell' microprocessor from Toshiba. To reuse it for mobile chipset production.
It's definitely related to NGP production as it will probably help to lower the cost of production in a way.

1- Gamestop pulled down that already.
Even when it's on, they posted a notice above the price: "official pricing and release dates have not been announced by the publisher."
2- Similar thing happen for 3DS preorders in gamestop where $999 is just a placeholder.
3- In an interview with Shu Yoshida(SCE president of worldwide studio), when asked about the price of NGP and the initial shock at the PlayStation 3 launch price was mentioned for comparison, he laughed and assured , "It's not going to be $599.".
