Someone's finding the current gaming scene a tad too dull for his liking. Keita Takahasi of Katamari and Noby Noby Boy fame has announced that he will be taking some time off from developing games because based on what he saw from this year's E3, the future's looking "a bit dull".

"At E3 I saw people putting on speeches but I thought the future seemed a bit dark. The 3D games didn't spark my interest." he confessed in a recent interview with OPM. "I think motion control's a bit old now, I don't think those games are the future. It all seemed a bit dull."

What's his idea of the future then? If he can have his way, he'd much rather just go back to the PS2 era. "It'd be good if we could go back to the PS2 era. Instead of spending lots of effort developing new technology, I think ideas are the most important things."

First off, what would you drive: A BMW with 400+ hp, or a Golf with same specs? BMW of course, better in viasuals, but has same performance.

I agree, ideas are the most important, but cmon. Most producers are greedy n selfish, they don't care about innovative crap anymore. Sure, most games look nice but are crappy to play. If the producers don't try, they will never beat the older simpler games. Now with all this wonderful tech available, this is the perfect time to try out 3d and new motion tech. Who knows what that will evolve into.

I agree totally on the new games lookin dull, cause they are. Give it some time though, once this crap era passes, we may strike another golden game age.

So I suppose you say games like Heavy Rain are nothing new? lol. From the dawn of video games, there have been devs that made another of the same, and devs that makes better games, more innovative games. Katamari was special at first, but he can't really say he had more creativity than other devs... He made the same game non stop...

I mean, when did you see better games than now? I played the majority of SNES JRPG and a part of the platformers. Some genesis games (I bought around 25), then PS1 (had around 150 copies), then PS2 (had around 250 copies). I bought around 25 ps3 games till now and copied around 35 xbox 360 games. And really, if you think there is no good games, you simply are not a gamer... Sadly but true. I like all kind of games, from tetris to Final Fantasy, passing by halo, modern warfare, gran turismo, GTA, etc.

You should play different kind of games maybe, like Heavy Rain, etc. We ARE in a golden age of video games. Don't wait for better games, you'll wait forever. Games are aalways better because of the realism they can get to, and technological advancement (like motion control for those kind of gamers).

Anyway, if you dislike games, it's a supprise you follow qj.net, lol.

@Censored99: I finished mainly all PS2 games that were really good or a JRPG (Yes, I played persona games). But newer JRPG like Lost Odyssey are way better than that. Ok, nothing can replace old JRPGs like FF6/7/8, chrono trigger, etc. But like Kingdom Hearts gave another BOOM in the story section, so will FF vs 13 (same dev). Good games are everywhere is you know how to search...

Lolwut. KingdomHearts, as fun as it may be, has the story of a generic shounen. Also, FF fans tend to bash the hell out of a KH and Sora is a MarySue. FFvsXIII isn't even going to compete with DragonQuestX because Square only focuses on visuals while the gameplay is piss easy. Also, why the hell are you say, "You gotta know where to look" most of the games you mentioned are generic mainstream crap that everyone knows about.

I agree 100%! I´m just a gamer but I try to purchase 2 to 3 new games a month. Most end up resold as used games relatively quick. Either lack originality or game developers focused to much on making the game challenging and for got about the fun factor required to make a good game now a days.

Even on my PS3 I play mostly ps2 games. SMT: Persona 4 was an awesome with awesome ideas separated from the others.

his comments may not be something a lot of people would expect at this day and age, but the man has a point. at the end of the day, what makes a game great is the story behind it, and not (only) necessarily the technology amplifying it. still, i think there's room for compromise for both, don't you think?

Well he's talking BS.

I'm not exactly sure what he's complaining about. If you want performance and super-powered games then play console games. If you want innovation with gameplay then head to the place where graphics are sacrificed for that gameplay - handhelds.

I wonder what the real reason for him leaving game development is.

i tried the noby crapy boy once and put the controller like it was on fire. this guy has narrow imagination. yeah not all titles are new and innovative but his are for my 5 year old daughter,so his opinion does not matter to me AT ALL. gaming community and the film community has to stop just bringing old titles from 80's-90's and stamping them out polished and "new",3D and whooosh flashy. there are many titles are being finished or saved for the holiday rush. so he can stay home and swim in all the lunch money he has earned from our kids.

my friends said that in his game informer he found and article about them remaking Legend of zelda ocarina of time i dont know about you but thats one classic i want remade with new graphics and enhancing systems lets just hope that they dont break it with there enhancements ans that the game still comes out mostly the same as the original but i still see where you stand some of the movie remakes nowadays are crap and useless

I'm hoping that 3D gaming and motion controls will eventually lead to virtual reality :) keep getting the gamer more and more in depth into the game.

the interesting thing is, that it is the job of game devs to bring us new experiences and variety. If they say games are dull, then "who are we gonna call?".

I can see why being involved in the videogame industry right now could be somewhat unfulfilling for an artist.

Kinda like rap music or movies these days, mostly corporate pop dogshit.

Luckily I am not so closely involved to give enough of a shit to break my heart about it.

I've got the distance to just laugh and wait.

They say necessity is the mother of invention and it's a fact that war and gaming are 2 things that help innovation, if it wasn't for manufacturers and developers wanting our money constantly throwing new peripherals and control methods a lot of things would just be financially unviable to advance and wouldn't end up on other things.
