July NPD: Xbox 360 takes the top spot while StarCraft II dominates

The July 2010 NPD results are in, and looks who's back on top? Thanks mainly to its newly redesigned slimmer model, Microsoft's Xbox 360 was the top selling home console for the first time since September of 2007, outselling Nintendo's hardware and doubling up on PS3's numbers.

 

  1. Xbox 360: 443,500
  2. Nintendo DS: 398,400
  3. Wii: 253,900
  4. PlayStation 3: 214,500
  5. PSP: 84,000

 

On the software side, while not listed in the results as NPD only covers console and portable SKUs, Blizzard's long awaited RTS sequel, StarCraft II dominated the charts selling an impressive 721K units for the month while EA Sports' college football title NCAA Football 11 leads the way on all platforms. NPD analyst Anita Frazier notes:

"While video game retail sales show a very slight decline versus last July, we have to consider the success of Starcraft II this month, which helped the PC games category to realize a 103 percent increase in dollars over last July. PC Games and video game industry sales combined for an increase of 4 percent in revenues as compared to July '09."



Here's the complete breakdown of the U.S. retail game sales for July:

  1. NCAA Football 11 (Electronic Arts, Xbox 360), 368,000
  2. NCAA Football 11 (Electronic Arts, PS3 ),298, 00
  3. Crackdown 2 (Microsoft, Xbox 360), 208,800
  4. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Nintendo, Wii), 193,00
  5. Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 (Warner Bros Interactive, NDS), 141, 700
  6. Red Dead Redemption (Take-Two Interactive, Xbox 360)
  7. Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 (Warner Bros Interactive, Wii)
  8. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies (Nintendo, DS)
  9. New Super Mario Bros Wii (Nintendo, Wii) 
  10. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision Blizzard, Xbox 360)

I completely agree. I got the game as a gift off my fiances brother. It was NOT GOOD but I can't sell it because it's a gift.

Will tail off. Most of these aren't net new owners, they are existing owners updating their old faulty units. I bet craigslist and gamestop are littered with the old style 360.

It's the next big leap for sure. 3D without glasses? I'm just hoping it's region free so I can organise a meeting in Japan and pick one up on the launch day.

Yea right. As if it'll be possible to get a 3DS on launch day without a preorder.

I dont like 360 much. l put it this way. Those who are into japanese products and their culture; they will choose PlayStation and wii. Those who linto America products would choose 360. I got both and I really see no difference in the systems just a small difference. But I play my PlayStation more because Im more into the culture of japan; its fascinating. I would continue to love to see them grow so I put my faith and money on Sony PlayStation3.
