Japan getting huge Silent Hill music box set next month |
Listed in: PSP, Wii, PS3, Xbox 360, PC Gaming Tags: Game Music, Konami, Silent Hill
For a game series like Silent Hill that relies a lot on atmosphere rather than more in-your-face scares, the careful selection of music for its accompanying soundtrack is a very important aspect. Thanks to the genius of composer Akira Yamaoka, Silent Hill soundtracks have consistently provided not only a haunting accompaniment perfecly suited to the games but excellent pieces that can stand on their own.
Silent Hill series publisher Konami has, of course, capitalized on the popularty of the series' music by way of individual game soundtracks CDs and collections. The company is currently releasing a series of CD box sets that feature collections of the tracks used in their games. So far, these have included sets from such game franchises as Gradius and Castlevania. In a few weeks, a Silent Hill box set will be joining them.

Konami has announced that they will be releasing the Silent Hill Sounds Box in Japan on March 16, 2011. This enormous collection spans eight CDs that contain music from the arcade game Silent Hill: The Arcade all the way back to the original Silent Hill released in 199 for the original Sony PlayStation console. Most of the soundtracks included in the collection have already been released in Japan in the past, but this will mark the first appearance of the Silent Hill: Homecoming, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Silent Hill: The Arcade CD soundtracks in the region.
The Silent Hill Sounds Box also comes with a ninth CD that contains game trailers and videos. Also included is a booklet full of concept art from the Silent Hill series. This collection is unlikely to ever get an official release outside of Japan, but if you're not averse to importing and are totally into the idea of owning such a comprehensive collection, you can set aside JP¥ 13,230 (about US$ 160) for it.

Still, that alone puts Yamaoka in my favourite composers list, so kudos to Konami for recognizing the importance of music in Silent Hill and releasing this.
That said I wont be getting it.

The first one was a surprisingly fine game at the time.
In all honesty konami is damn near the Japanese activision IMO.
As far as their ability to pimp and ruin a promising franchise.
(Or the japanese sqeenix for that matter!
