Jaffe: PSN game sharing is horse dung

david-jaffe-1PSN game sharing is a feature that does not excite David Jaffe. In fact, just recently, he had some very choice words for PSN's feature.

As you should know by now, game sharing allows a gamer to download a game purchase on PSN, and then later on share it to up to five other PS3 or PSP systems. This does not sit well with Jaffe at all, who has also released Calling All Cars via PSN.

Making his true feelings for the PSN game sharing public via his Twitter, he said:

"@zKAPOWz No, but I thin game sharing on PSN is utter horse shit. Why is it ok to buy a game and give it to 2-5 peeps 4 free? Insane!"

"Assuming game sharing is still working that way on PSN. It's been a while since I checked. Coulda been shut down for all I know."

Should we as consumers lose out on a product if it is locked to one console?

People have multiple consoles.

I've Game Shared before and I can tell you that this guy is just upset because the consumer wins in this scenario.

If he's got a problem, why is he being so cheap and releasing it as a digital download. Learn to publish to disc fggt.

The ps3 hasnt been publicly cracked yet, as such theres no way for everyone to download his game for free except game sharing.

is it possible that he made a horrid game? absolutely not it must be because all those pirates sharing their accounts, if we do HIS math if there was a total downloads of 1 million then there should have been 5 million in reality....

time and time again they could never face the fact that their work is a pile of horse dung...

as a side note whats with all of the sudden caring about jaffe QJ? did the dude just open a blog? or do like 20 interviews?

I have 2 PSPs (well, one is my sisters but it's got my account on it), and I don't want to have to buy the game twice. that's just greedy.

See, they all say at first that they care about the consumer, but if they did, they wouldn't care much about such a topic as this.

They put their games on there with the knowledge of this feature. YOU went through with it, YOU had the choice. So stop bitching.

This. The indie developers have been proving that it's not just the publishers who are anti-consumer money grabbers.

I have 2 PS3s and 4 PSPs. I'll be DAMN*D if I'm going to start buying digital content (which I can't rent, return, trade-in, let a friend borrow, or sell later) if I can't load it onto more than one device. If Devs/Pubs had their way we'd have to give them money everytime we booted something up.

It's tied to my freaking PSN account anyway. There's your DRM. You'd have to be an idiot to share your PSN password/identity with someone.

If this were to change I would vote with my wallet and stop buying stuff off PSN.

Nearly everyone I know who had a 60GB console and got theirs when I did (On release or within a few months of that), has had the YLOD strike, I have had it twice on 60GB consoles, and one bad bluray laser.

You'd think I'd learn to stop buying them, but either way 4 of my 5 unlocks for Calling all Cars, among other titles, have been used on ps3's I myself owned. Sony claimed they release the SKU's once the ps3 is sent in for repair, but they haven't done it on any of these 3 consoles, so hopefully the new slims will survive a little longer.

I agree with this entirely, but I do think it should be locked to consoles where the master account is the one you purchased the software on, then you wouldn't be able to take it and put it on your friend's ps3.

David Jaffe is cool and all but I disagree with his thoughts as a gamer. It is one of the highlights of getting a PS3 and making online transactions. As a developer however, I guess I can see where he's coming from. And last I checked, game sharing still works :-) . Uncharted 2 DLC baby! F#@K YEA!

Has he thought that maybe one reason why his game sells is because of game sharing? After all, many probably feel like they can take the risk since they can share it with others to get another game if they dont like it or share the cost with others.

And then there's the whole, if you own multiple consoles scenario.

I don't game share even with family but when I do get my second PS3 it will be nice not to have to re-purchase my games for it. Jaffe is blowing more smoke out his a**. I respect him as a dev but he acts like a b***h a little too much for my taste. Video game version of Uwe Boll but without the lousy games lol

Are you Sure? PSN is so awesome, even on the psp. The psp sure cant play online, but all of the themes, movies/shows, games, not to mention addons are what really matter. Hell, I just downloaded all of the addon cars for Gran Turismo PSP. The point is that PSN is one of the best things that happened to PlayStation.

If you own a PS3 download ad hoc party. Even though a game is ad hoc only, you'll be able to find people playing it on ad hoc party and be able to play them with no noticeable lag alteast four to five states away with a good online connection.

just because you are in the industry, we are supposed to agree with this clown? God of War is a great game but if you wanna disable the 'sharing' feature just like they did with the 'other os', then make a way to be able to redownload your purchases without the bs, because I have had my ps3 replaced twice and without game sharing I would have lost m stuff man!

Has no game play value. Got it, tried it, DUMPED it. Now have Jaffe buy 400 downloads, then break the machine he downloaded to. Replace his machine and tell him to buy the 400 downloads again. If he complains tell him no game sharing. He needs to think with his brain not his arse.

I haven't done any game sharing yet but I think most sharing must be between family or close friends. Because I don't think anyone will risk leaving an account with personal information on a complete stranger's console, right?...right?...

Still, I think that if some close family member or a close friend would like to "trade share" a couple PSN games with me it shouldn't matter to anyone.

On a side note, I think it's already time for us users, to be able to sell any bought DLC. It seems some devs are using DLC as a scapegoat so buyers can't be able to sell used DLC games. And don't say it's not possible because I can think on more than 10 ways to do that.

# 360 DRMGuest 2010-04-22 10:44
On 360 you can download DLC to as many machines as you want with the stipulation that only the ORIGINAL machine downloaded to can play offline. Any other machines would require the original user account to be logged into XBL to play. Since you can only log into XBL from one 360 at a time this would only allow 2 simultaneous copies of the game, and only 1 to be played online. The catch is you can only transfer ALL licenses to a new 360 once every 12 months, not individually. I migrated all my old licenses to my newer 360 right after I got it. If I were a dev concerned about Game-Sharing the answer is simple, release on Xbox not PS3. Capcom is trying single system locks on Final-Fight, I'm guessing that's the future PSN folks.

Fine, but I share my discs with friends, if they like it, they buy it.

I understand that a dev sees it as a massive loss on potential revenue, but that's the way the system works - if you don't like it, change jobs.

It's really just an example of someone who's not a regular/average gamer who doesn't understand the necessity/convenience of having game sharing.

In the end:
1) you need the ability to redownload games you bought when you replace your ps3.. not like you have a physical disc to show for it, and you 'did' pay for the game

2) Personally (and I'm sure I'm not the only one) I've bought at least $800 of PSN stuff solely because I could split/share it with friends. Some of those $15 games are pretty hard to justify by yourself, but with friends you can just say you're each putting in $4 and in the end it's made me/us buy at 'least' 10 times more content and try games that we would otherwise NEVER have.

In fact, over half the time when we buy stuff off our shared account, it's often only 1 of us that ends up liking/playing it anyway.. yet we keep adding $100 to it for the sake of 'everyone.' If you ask me it's a GENIUS Sony psychological tactic to end up selling more content :)

# so true..Guest 2010-04-19 00:44
i totally agree. i've def spent well over $600 alone on DLC and i haven't even shared it.

but its incentive for me to buy a PS3 slim (got a launch 60gb w/a 500gb hdd) since i can put all of my dlc on it (except those dang copyright protected gamesaves).

i'm so sick of jaffe. whats the last game he put out? oh yea, it sucked. really sucked (calling all cars).

is he even developing anymore?

*Bleep* you! Some of us have several PSP and PS3 systems (I have 2 PSPs and a PS3and plan on getting atleast 1 more of each considering how many models they keep pumping out). I could understand his view if it weren't for the fact that demos are just as locked up as the rest of them. Here's an Idea allow UNLIMITED numbers of systems to access a single copy but have a check-in/check-out system to ensure that only one copy is activated at once. These morons can have their DRM and we don't have to put up with this BS anymore.

# Does game sharing help the industry?Guest 2010-04-19 05:40
I find it strange that all game devs think game sharing harms them.

For me the ability to game share is usually the deciding factor on a purchase, i'm not lucky enough to have a lot of money for gaming and have only been able to purchase games in the past by going halves with freinds in similar situations to myself. Before digital distribution this meant that one of us played and then the disk was passed. Now we can both play at the same time.

My point is that if game sharing wasn't an option then the developer would not see a penny of either of our money, with game sharing they get a sale.

speaking of game sharing, a buddy of mine bought the final fight game on my system and i played it the next day. went over to his house a few hours later and he downloaded it onto his system and when we went to play it, he could not. we kept getting an error that he would have to wait 24 hours from when it was last played on another system. we have never had this problem before. shortly after midnight it worked tho. :o

Jaffe must be an idiot. Thinks he's top dog or some shit. If a developer wants to release content and make it so that only one console can use it, it's possible. You just have to 1. force it to connect to the internet to play and 2. if it's been connected from another console, then it won't be able to be accessed until 24 hours after that console stopped playing it.

Sure this doesn't work with everything, but there are surely ways of doing it if he really wants to be an asshole. Which it sure seems like he does want to be a money-grubbing asshole because most DLC is bullshit anyway. Content in a game is designated ahead of time to be released later on as "downloadable content" even though it was completed with the rest of the game at the time of release. This isn't always the case, but everyone knows that this is true in most cases. I'm sure Jaffe knows it, too. Cocksucker.

so in his eyes downloading everything is the future and it will only be able to be downloaded once. So he thinks it is ok to have to pull out a flat bed and load the behemoth that is the 360 or ps3 and take it to a friends place to play a game... Anyone remember when they didnt cut half the game box away in the name of saving .3 oz plastic and when there was a memory card holder in the game box so you could put your favorite multi player game in its own box then put your memory card in there and go to your friends house and play some multiplayer.

I HATE THIS DOWNLOAD IS THE FUCKING FUTURE it is not it is a step towards leasing games instead of buying them...
