An Italian American organization is demanding Take-Two Interactive to hold back the release of Mafia II, which will be out next week. Calling the game "a pile of racist nonsense that perpetuates stereotypes of Italian Americans as violent, murderous mobsters," UNICO National, which claims to be the largest Italian American service organization in the United States, is apparently not happy with the portrayal of Italians in the game. According to UNICO National president Andre' DiMino:

"Why would [Take Two] foist a game on their targeted audience of young people wherein they will indoctrinate a new generation into directly associating Italians and Italian Americans with violent, murderous organized crime, to the exclusion of all of the other 'mafias' run by other ethnic and racial groups. Take Two is directly, blatantly and unfairly discriminating and demeaning one group to the exclusion of all others. We are demanding they halt release of the game and cleanse it of all references to Italians and Italian Americans."

"We don't need, nor deserve, a new generation being brainwashed into directly associating Italians and Italian Americans with the bloody, murderous thugs and criminals rampant in Mafia II."

In a statement, Take-Two chairman Strauss Zelnick quickly responded to the issue and said:

"Mafia II tells a compelling story about organized crime in America -- a subject that for decades has been featured in movies, television shows and novels. Neither UNICO nor any other organization purporting to represent Italian-Americans has seen or played Mafia II. At Take-Two, we balance our right to free expression with what we believe is a thoughtful and responsible approach to creating and marketing our products. Mafia II is M-rated in accordance with our industry's strict standards. It is specifically not targeted toward young people."

"We will only release a title that meets our standards: as art, as entertainment and as a socially responsible product. We aim to distinguish creative and compelling story telling that advances artistic expression from subject matter that gratuitously exploits or glorifies violence or stereotypes. I fully and completely stand behind our creative teams and products, including Mafia II."

This reminds me of that guy from California (I think) that tried to get violent video games banned. He failed to because video games are protected by the first amendment.

If everyone has forget about Italian Americans being gangsters in the past maybe its time we forget about black people being slaves?

because thats one Im sick of hearing. I mean slavery happened all over the world throughout history to all races, why do blacks get to be the only ones to moan about it?
Non of us are free even today, yet still blacks think they deserve some sort of payment for it, wtf makes them so special?

If they had been the ones to pull their fingers out and invent usefull things like boats first, they would have done it to other races.

tbh I just think they're pissed because theres nothing in the world that proves they are better than everyone else like they believe they are. (for the most part)

Simply because people are unwilling to let stuff go. NO ONE in this generation of youth has ANYTHING to do with racism in regards to slavery, or natives and land rights, Italians and the mafia of the 30s but you'll quickly find out that every group out there are willing to dig into that past and claim racism at a moments notice.

Until these groups get over it... we'll continue to see crap like this.

why does this even matter to that UNICO group? Everyone knows the mafia existed at one point & probably they still do, but they just aren't as "loud" as they once were. Just look films like The Godfather, Goodfellas, Casino, The Untouchables & Donnie Brasco they were all based on true events. Im from chicago, and the mafia here definitely left there mark in the city with famous crime figures like Al Capone in the 30's during prohibition and The Outfit in the 50's & 60's who hands down controlled Las Vegas. So why do they want to protest and pretend like it never happened. I agree that most Italians were good hard working Americans and not everyone was fit for the wiseguy lifestyle, but UNICO cant just blame Mafia 2 and 2K Games. They should have said something to the mafia a long ago..lol. So I think they should just drop it. Im 1st Gen. Mexican-Amercian so I still have ties to mexico. I admit that we have a shitload of drug cartels and yeah they make us look bad, but if there was a game made about them would i play it? FUCK YEA..

Here's what the response from Take Two should have been

"In response to all Italian Americans whining about a game they've never played. Ehhhh, fuggedaboutit. Where were youse louts when Godfather the movie and games came out. No where. Go eat a cannoli and shut the hell up."
