Inafune on resignation: I want to change the Japanese gaming industry

inafuneKeiji Inafune's resignation from Capcom this past week sent shockwaves not only to the Japanese gaming industry, but all over the world as well. On the day that he announced his departure from Capcom via Twitter was also the same day that he gave an interview with Japanese gaming site 4Gamer. Thanks to NeoGaf, we now have a full translation of what went on in that interview, thereby giving us clearer insight on Inafune's stand regarding the matter.

The main reason why he resigned from Capcom, according to him, was because he wasn't satisfied with where their gaming industry is headed. "The reason why I'm quitting is basically because I think that the game industry itself must change the way it goes about making games. You might think I'm being hypocritical, but the really big wall that the Japanese game industry is hitting is the charging of its creators into salarymen." In short, he doesn't feel like game developers are being given their due credit and appreciation -- something that's also apparent inside Capcom.

One of the more surprising things he divulged in the interview was the seeming lack of alarm or concern from Capcom when he tendered his resignation. "Even when I submitted my letter of resignation, nobody contacted me about it. (laughs) There should've been a, 'Hey Inafune, do you have some time?' or, 'What do you mean by this? I want to hear it straight from you.' Nothing. Zero.

Not a single member of the board of directors understands games. I didn't ask to be a board member, but if you don't have someone who understands games in the position of making those final decisions, there winds up being a business-side that doesn't understand games and development-side that wants to make games. I feel that's the biggest problem Capcom will be facing."

So what's next for Inafune? "If I can, I want to change the Japanese gaming industry. I don't want to abandon it. After I leave Capcom, I don't want to, for example, just work for EA, Activision, and Rockstar. That would be abandoning Japan."

A very insightful interview, indeed. If you want to find out what else Inafune-san said (and am sure you do), then just click on the source link below.

Wow it makes scene why he left now.
He didnt quit to "rest" he quit cause the gaming industry is doing horribly!

and i strongly agree with him.. lately the market has been flooded with average games with less then average ideas.

if there is none at the higher ups the understand games and are only there to manage the best way to make money.. then its gonna be full of mediocre games.

We need someone like Inafune that KNOWS games on the board, someone that enjoys video games like the hardcore gamers. Not just focus how can we rake in more 10 year olds or get casual gamers to continue buying lame games just they dont know better.

I couldent agree more the higher ups are churning out games that they know will make money insted of new ideas and we are getting the same ole crap every year. Now we do get a few good titles a year but most of its just market fodder.

That's the current plague of the gaming world, people in game related companies that only think on how to make easy money.

Do you people honestly think this guy actually resigned? Are you people so simple minded that you actually believed he wanted to quit Capcom after working there for 23 years? His retarded comment obviously got the attention of the Kenzo Tsujimoto (CEO) and he was forced to resign or get fired... Most people would resign to save face.

If he wanted to changed the Japanese game industry then he should've stayed at Capcom and used their vast resources and networking to change the industry not start another Capcom with no funding and resources...

What an idiot.

All this guy wanted was more money and fame for himself. The question will be is he willing to pay this employee the money he wants to get pay himself?

This guy should work for EA, Activision, and Rockstar. He'll fit in just fine, after all they produced second class games with NO original ideas at all. When was the last time Rockstar produced a game worth playing?

He's one of the most influential video game developers in the world.

I promise you no CEO (or board, for that matter since that's what it would take to remove a global board member) would risk such a strong potential hit in stocks, revenue, and PR over a simple comment. Especially for their head developer of some of their biggest projects mid-development (i.e. Legends 3, Universe, MvC3).

If you look at the state of gaming (particularly within Capcom), not to mention various other sources (http://www.qj.net/qjnet/news/yoshinori-expresses-his-thoughts-on-inafunes-resignation.html) Inafune is clearly not alone in this and his decision makes quite a bit of sense.

All that aside, look at Capcom's track record lately. They're becoming more reclusive and standard-fair than ever. They're about a step away from becoming Square-Enix and just pushing out ports/remakes all day. The old gaming companies are losing their way. I don't know if this will do anything to help, but hopefully it'll start something.

On a side note: I seriously doubt Inafune is lacking in either money or fame. The only game developers more notable than him are Kojima and Miyamoto.

And the last time Rockstar produced a game worth playing? How about Red Dead Redemption? Heard of it maybe? Fact check your info before spewing random nastiness across the interwebs. I'm just sayin'.

What about Hironibu Sackaguchi and Testseyu Nomaru, they are also more notable than him and Miyamoto and their on the same level as Hideo Kojima.

First what the hell are you talking about board member and hit in stocks and revenue? do you have a glue to what you're saying. When you say something as stupid as he did it's only natural for the CEO to fire his sorry ass and threw him out to the trash.

Regardless whether is quit or forced to resign Capcom shares didn't fall off the Tokyo Stock Exchange...

I don't know everything about Inafune but he spend most of his time at Capcom as an Executive producer. So how much creative and input does he have in the game development? NOT A HELL of a LOT. Why did you think Hideo Kojima personally directed/Written MGS 4 instead of just being the simple Executive producer.

Ask anyone from the game industry and they'll tell you it's the director of the game that actually have full creative control over the game.

1...Resident Evil 2 was directed by Hideki Kamiya

2... Dead Rising 1 and 2 was directed by Yoshinori Kawano

You see where I am going... I'm not saying he's a total dead beat and I'm sure he contributed in all the games he worked on but certainly he's not the be all and end at Capcom.

I asked what game Rockstar produced worth playing and you gave me Red Dead Redemption... Are you kidding me. This second class cowboy game is worth playing, LOL. One minute you're saying Capcom is doing remake and port and all that stuff.. Than you're telling me a sequel to Red Dead Revolver is Worth Playing... LOL

Speaking of Sequel and ports, how's Halo Reach? That's a complete new and original idea right? I mean the american people never played a Halo game before right? What a joke. What about Call of Duty: Black Ops coming in a few weeks, we never seen this kind of FPS game before?

Do you see the hypocrisy in your voice. It's OK for Western studio to do remake after remake but is it end of the world if a Japanese studio does it.

Japanese games only need to do what they do best.

Quirky, weird, exotic Japanese shit.

I hope he wont be trying to "westernize" like squeenix, because thats the worst idea ever.

Maybe working at Nintendo would be a could idea. I mean they do treat their developer with a lot of respect and also have major pulling power when it comes to their games.
Either that or start his own company

Haven't you notice that companys only care about profits this days ? That guy is right, He is not valuable for the company so there is no point in working for them, the salary is worst that what he could made on his own, also there is no credit for its good job.

If he want to start a new company let him try,I think what is killing gaming is the lack of ideas, and the look for profits compromising quality.

Why are you criticizing him for trying to get more money ? That is better to a bunch of executives that did nothing getting all the money from others work.

If we want new fresh ideas we need to stop the support to monopolys, that is basically what all big companys try, be the only company on the market lol.

it kind sucks that he left but he is right. gaming is going down hill. we are getting the same bullshit games and nothing new is coming out. look at kinect and move. all the have are some lame sports games and lamer dance games. the we did that years ago. hardcore gamers dont want this shit. we want real games not some bullshit they made to make money
