How's Final Fantasy XIV doing so far?

Just a few days ago, Final Fantasy XIV hit retail for the PC. If you're one of those who signed up for the Collector's Edition, then you've probably had a good week or so with the new MMORPG. Looking to count yourself into the user base? There are a few things you should know about first.

Despite a few kinks in the game, it's still an MMO and will continue to receive support in the form of updates and improvements. Right now, though, the game doesn't appear to be well-polished yet, despite allotting time for the beta.

That said, you may want to put the purchase on hold for now until things improve, or maybe wait until next year for the PS3 version.

This game is playable only online, like MAG (PS3, 250 players online), imagine you loose your internet connection, it's impossible to play it. :-|

LoL @ no mail system, proper AH, community forums.

Those are the most basic things ever, and it's not like Square hasn't made an MMO before or have a million MMO's to rip off....

Very sad...square just keeps churning out so much garbage...

I'll reply that the lack of an auction house is completely intentional. Players are allowed to open NPCesque bazaar shops and that is how SE wants people to do their buying and selling. Basically demanding a bit more active research and active hunting for goods.

I think its stupid, but if nothing else, the AH thing wasnt a surprise.

I see, well that is an interesting idea...opens up avenues in the future for having merchant alts that you supply goods to with your main. You could also contract out the acquisition of goods (ie. pay china farmers :P). Then as long as you could run an automated storefront you could be the go to guy for everyone, just need to leave your game open all the time.

Se has NEVER had a forum for it's players, not in even in FFXI that has been running for about 6 years, and it's one of the only MMO developers that do this. That has been one of my only gripes, and I didn't expect them to be any different in FFXIV. When I do decide to go back to an MMO this winter it'll be FFXI NOT FFXIV. Atleaft that game is polished to a shine.

I've been playing Guild Wars for the past 4 years. Does it have a mailing system? no. Does it have a bidding room of sort? no. Does it have an official forum? no. Does it enable players to report bugs? no. This video asks things that are not THAT basic at all! People just want too much. Give SE time, the game is just 10 days old!

I think people need to stop equating MMOs with World of Warcraft, because many of these features (especially the AH) are features of WoW and its clones, it's like people don't realize Japanese MMOs are different from Western MMOs, honestly, even the leveling ratio is different.

MMOs do NOT equal WoW.

"Cloning" or ripping off ideas is the only reason we as a species are where we are.

Someone makes a discovery, finds out that it works well....it's up to the next person to use that discovery (because it works) then make it work better using experience since that discovery has been in place.

If people didn't do this we'd still be sitting around waiting for lightening to start fires cuz no one wanted to rip off nature...

I guess we don't support innovation anymore? Might as well just copy everything. It's called thinking outside the box. I would not want to be the guy that just copied WoW slapped a new title on it and called it my own.

I'd have to say that the article is kind of biased against xiv. I've had the LE since it came out and have been playing it since pretty regularly. I have personally been disconnected only 1 time, and experienced 1 emergency maint. and 1 scheduled maint. the only real problem i see is how many people are crafting @ the campsites and in the markets. (its to be expected, just makes everything slow to load the npc's and the characters)

also, ff14 does kind of have its own type of "forum". its the lodestone website.

well, the one thing i really disagree with is how they say creating the account is "easy". square doesn't really tell you how to do it and browsing around the site is a chore. simply put. its a hassle

I played the beta and I could see myself really getting into the game and liking it. The only problem though is that there really are a lot of problems with it still. As mentioned in this video. The game play can be very smooth but only if you already know what's going on. I was running in circles for a long time when I first started up the beta trying to figure out what I was supposed to do and where to get quest and such. I think it does things well even if they are different but more guidance is needed or else people won't stay with the game. I stopped playing the beta for a long time while having only reached lv 2 because of these reasons before coming back and trying again. I got the hang of it but still wasn't to excited to come back due to all the other stuff that the game just expects you to know. I think it'd be a great game with a few minor upgrades but until then I'm holding back on getting retail.

It's all about preference. I bet this game is great for the people who prefer Final fantasy, specially old MMO. I'm installing it right now.. ;-) It's going to rape my summer and reduce my chance of having children
