2. Familiarity turns alien
3. Developers should take more risks

The first-person shooter market that Homefront will be wading into next month is pretty competitive. That's something that comes hand in hand with being such a big slice of the video game industry. What makes thing all the more interesting is that Homefront will be pitting itself up directly against new installments in a few of the most reconized names in the FPS market. Developer Kaos Studios, however, think that their new IP has what it takes to stand up against the big boys.

One ace Kaos has up its sleeve is that in order to alleviate the "massacre fatigue" that comes when players have to go up against seemingly endless waves of enemies for extended periods of time, the studio has decided to insert story moments and the like in between lengths of core combat.

"The way to think about the "massacre fatigue" problem is not so much that we've set out to solve it completely in this game - because obviously if you play through a 30 minute level and get only five or six kills that isn't going to be satisfying and I doubt you could sell that to the mass market," said Homefront lead level designer Rex Dickson in a CVG interview.

"The challenge for us was to solve that problem without breaking the formula of what an FPS is," he continued. "The way we solve it isn't by reducing firefights to long engagements where you can't see where the enemy . Instead, every two or three minutes we break up core combat with a moment, be it a story moment, a drama moment, spectacle moment or vista moment. Right at the point where you're starting to think "oh God, another wave?", it stops and you get a moment. We never want you in core combat for too long before we move you to the next big thing."

Another thing that Kaos is banking on to push Homefront to the head of this year's class of FPS titles is its story and setting. Homefront's whole setup -- where a nuclear-armed Korean People's Army invades the U.S. -- is in and of itself a rather risky move, but according to Dickson the whole "playing into peoples' real world fears" is something that Kaos is actively trying to accomplish. Making players feel "unsetlled and uncomfortable" with Homefront's images of suburban America with "scenes of torture and despair" is one of the game's main vibes.

"When people ask why this is set in America and not somewhere else, we say that we're trying to come up with an idea and fiction that preys upon a paranoia," he said. "That all ties into American culture and how we think we're untouchable. We're elitists: 'Nobody can touch us, nobody can invade us, we've got a better military, more guns and money'. We're taking that Zeitgeist and preying on it. We're asking, 'What if this did happen?'"

Looks interesting enough. Too bad there's no demo.

Seeing as they are the new kids on the block, they should definitely make a demo. But then again, if its not up to the standards that they are implying, then I guess they want the curious ones to buy it not knowing what to expect so they could make some money off of it then...

# Turning Point: Modern WarfareCynthia 2011-02-26 22:02
So long as it's not completely tits up broken like Turning point: fall of liberty was, this game looks really promising.
Turning point had an incredible concept and possibilities, some scenarios really made my blood boil. But it seems they spent more resources coming up with great concept art and a good story line to worry about that pesky little factor known as game play. Also when it had come out, the market was flooded with WWII FPS'.

Rent it for a laugh but don't expect much else

great article!

# what about LA and the southOvaltineJenkins 2011-02-28 14:48
What would happen to an invading army in gang heavy cities like LA or in the south where so many people own guns? It would be like us in Vietnam where anyone could just start shooting at you and your guys, but with better guns and more frequently. I just think if this scenario is to be believable there better be gangs starting skirmishes or groups of hunters and people that just raided their local sporting goods stores for rifles and shot guns.
