GameStop has been making a killing on used game sales over the years. Now, developers and publishers are fighting back a bit thanks to the advent of downloadable content that bypass the physical retail market. GameStop's not about to let that cash cow just pass by, though, so they've been looking for ways to get in on the DLC market as well. Their latest idea? Midnight launches for DLC.

At the BMO Capital Markets 18th Annual Digital Entertainment Conference today, GameStop CEO J. Paul Raines told analysts that they plan to expand their midnight launch events to cover DLC releases in addition to new game launches. Yes, they want to ask gamers to line up for something that they can wait for in the comfort of their own homes. Brilliant!

If you're a huge fan of experiencing GameStop's up-selling strategies, you're in luck too. Executive chairman Daniel DeMatteo added during a Q&A portion that GameStop employees who ring up a used game sale will get a computer prompt to try and up-sell any DLC for the game being purchased.

Huh? Are they being serious or just using some marketing strategy to convince developers to give them a bigger slice of the DLC pie? I mean none of my local stores took Kinect serious enough to do midnight opening so exactly what kind of DLC would find people stupid enough to do this for. Maybe in 10 years when digital infrastructure improves but not now.

It's a business, what do you think it's going to be about? Picking flowers and licking lolly pops? But aside from that having a midnight launch for DLC is stupid.

When the store opens do people just cheer and go home to download the DLC?

My God, how thick are the executives? People go to shops to get retail products, as in CD's, game guides and so forth, not something they can get in the comfort of their own homes.

Though in the long run, GameStop and all other retail stores are on the way down. Thanks to the Internet and its digital copies. A la Steam folks, full games on Xbox Marketplace and PS Store.

GameStop IS going to die, its just like the plague though, only a matter of time.

There aren't a lot of full games on the PSS.

Physical format ftw!

And what about people who don't have or want a CC? DLC isn't available for everyone to purchase and COUNTLESS people miss out on it because of that.

It's thanks to retailers that sell online point cards and DLC in general that those people get to experience it at all.

Seriously? I could see someone running up to GameStop to get a new game at midnight launch, but why buy a Download Code at midnight, when they're just gonna go home and download it anyways?

Not worth the middle-of-the-night trip, if you ask me.

I agree, I don't get the whole midnight thing for DLC but it does help to have retailers that sell DLC for those people that need to pay with cash.

Problem is if you just need to buy your points to get DLC you could easily replace a store with those places you buy your mobile top-ups, and then developers completely cut out the middle man and make even more profit, so all they doing is desperately trying to extend the life of Gamestop.

Not yet.. But it takes absolutely no effort from M$, Sony, Nintendo to set it up, and developers are only entertaining gamestops ideas because they still a big retailer for physical media.

Well, ok then. Until then, cash only people have no choice. They have to get their DLC where they can and right now that's pretty much only gamestop. Unless you factor in 7-11 and facebook games?

This is just sad from Gamestop. No DLC content will make me rush to a midnight release.
