GameStop COO: DLC is critical to survival |

While other retailers would consider digital content as a threat to their business, GameStop COO J. Paul Raines believes that DLC is critical to their survival. As such, he says that the next challenge for him and his business is to promote DLC to those who are unaware of its existence and how to access them.
Speaking at a Business Law conference at Southern Methodist University, Raines stressed the importance of downloadable content and its rapid growth. "The only way a company like ours survives is being dedicated to the category," he said. "Downloadable content is a good thing because it enhances and extends games."
A survey from Frank N. Magid Associates earlier this month saw that only 15% of gamers purchase DLC, and an even bigger 43% aren't even aware of them. Even though one may throw question to the survey methodology, there's still some truth to those figures somewhat, and GameStop is looking to change that.

I for one hope they go bankrupt...
it's not fair to see how they rape consumers on trade ins.... they give you 10% of what they plan to sell the game for ... and that is nearly 100% profit... after all most games traded into gamestop were bought at gamestop... I hope they choke and die for the corruption , manipulation and general exploitation of their consumer base

But you do have to be at least some what fair in criticizing them. Gamestop takes trade ins for ALL games, even the ones they know they'll never sell. So they have to give a small amount for games they can sell to make up for the losses they take on the hundreds of thousands of junk titles they pay out $1 for.
I hate it too, but my solution is, eBay that sh*t

...$7
Seriously?!?!?! Even the "used" copies were still going for $44.99 at the time... I cant even count how many games I've bought from there with a "new" sticker on it, even though the game had obviously been played before (ffs sometimes the instruction book would have handwritten notes in it)
Not to mention a lot of the employees (in san diego anyways) are complete douche bags.

This would be a big win for both Game stop and third party distributors. On a plus side for gamers it should be cheaper for the consumer because there would be no production cost in actual printing and shipping the game.

Games have gotten expensive and it's nice to get some back. While I don't care for Gamestop as a store or the employees, the concept is sound.
