While other retailers would consider digital content as a threat to their business, GameStop COO J. Paul Raines believes that DLC is critical to their survival. As such, he says that the next challenge for him and his business is to promote DLC to those who are unaware of its existence and how to access them.

Speaking at a Business Law conference at Southern Methodist University, Raines stressed the importance of downloadable content and its rapid growth. "The only way a company like ours survives is being dedicated to the category," he said. "Downloadable content is a good thing because it enhances and extends games."

A survey from Frank N. Magid Associates earlier this month saw that only 15% of gamers purchase DLC, and an even bigger 43% aren't even aware of them. Even though one may throw question to the survey methodology, there's still some truth to those figures somewhat, and GameStop is looking to change that.

Stores could still have a future when DLC takes over if they just stock the shelves with display cases and just give your PSN or XBL account name over the counter and they just put the DLC directly into your account, i think this is what Gamestop's hoping for if the developers don't manage to get complete control.

as a former gamestop employee......
I for one hope they go bankrupt...
it's not fair to see how they rape consumers on trade ins.... they give you 10% of what they plan to sell the game for ... and that is nearly 100% profit... after all most games traded into gamestop were bought at gamestop... I hope they choke and die for the corruption , manipulation and general exploitation of their consumer base

But you do have to be at least some what fair in criticizing them. Gamestop takes trade ins for ALL games, even the ones they know they'll never sell. So they have to give a small amount for games they can sell to make up for the losses they take on the hundreds of thousands of junk titles they pay out $1 for.

I hate it too, but my solution is, eBay that sh*t

they defect most products and get a return on them... and if current trends show anything .. all those not sold games will go retro in 15 years and sell for full or double price.

very true, not more than a few months after I bought RE:5 I called to ask how much would i get for store credit on trade in...

...$7

Seriously?!?!?! Even the "used" copies were still going for $44.99 at the time... I cant even count how many games I've bought from there with a "new" sticker on it, even though the game had obviously been played before (ffs sometimes the instruction book would have handwritten notes in it)

Not to mention a lot of the employees (in san diego anyways) are complete douche bags.

Game Stop probably see's the advantage of using DLC as an easy way to keep the smaller game store chains who they were unable to buy out from expanding while further cement their monopoly. Also if they could have direct access to your game account they could make even more advertisement revenue from direct advertisements then they do from their crappy magazine. Game stop could care less about the used game industry they make butt loads of more money from signing people up for their rewards program and magazine. More readers equal more money from advitisers. Game makers would also prefer to use DLC because that would mean for each time the game is purchased they would receive a cut of the profit. As it stands right now they only get paid if the game is bought new.
This would be a big win for both Game stop and third party distributors. On a plus side for gamers it should be cheaper for the consumer because there would be no production cost in actual printing and shipping the game.

It's capitalism. What they're doing works, and it certainly beats buying your game, beating it, and then shelving it forever.

Games have gotten expensive and it's nice to get some back. While I don't care for Gamestop as a store or the employees, the concept is sound.

it is still an immoral practice... almost to the point of usury... As for taking in all games ... they will give you less than 5.00 for many games... any sports game ... 1.00 unless you throw 3 of them together for a preorder and you will get 13-20.00 for 3 games... and then they take that game you sold off for 1-5.00 and turn around and sell them for 15-40.00.... each game you gave up for chump change.... you dont want to shelve a game... look on craigslist and start a local trade ring....

Most former employees see all the crap gamestop is about. their push for dlc just shows how much influence in the business they have. as a former gamestop employee that left on my own terms (as opposed to many that have been fired for stealing and inappropriate conduct) i have my fair share of complaints about the unethicality of the company at large. Conflicts of interests asside, if the game companies and developers get their act together when it comes to dlc, then im sure they can run gamestop out of business forever.
