With Final Fantasy XIII's Western release less than a month away, early reviews for the game have already started to surface. Thing is, not everybody's happy about the game. Square Enix, however, doesn't care.

Producer Yoshinori Kitase told CVG sister mag Xbox World 360: "We try not to listen to the critics too much. Most of the criticisms have come because the first half of the game is very linear.
"But we've got a story to tell, and it's important the player can engage with the characters and the world they inhabit before letting them loose..."

"We try not to listen to the critics too much. Most of the criticisms have come because the first half of the game is very linear," producer Yoshinori Kitase recently told gaming mag Xbox World 360. "But we've got a story to tell, and it's important the player can engage with the characters and the world they inhabit before letting them loose..."

Director Motomu Toriyama also chimed in, explaining away negative reactions as rooted in the west's exposure to open-world RPGs.

"We think many reviewers are looking at Final Fantasy XIII from a western point of view. When you look at most Western RPGs, they just dump you in a big open world, and let you do whatever you like... [It] becomes very difficult to tell a compelling story when you're given that much freedom," he explained.

Of the print reviews released so far, Game Informer's 9.25 score is the highest, with PSM3 Magazine's 70% score the lowest. Final Fantasy XIII comes out on March 9.

Yeah Square, just sit there not caring what people want, watching the profits come in.

Properly will still buy it though...

Those who really want it won't give a damn about reviews anyway. It'll still sell.

FF has always been story driven with varying "linearosity" (new word for the day). These critics are ignorant. WTF buys the 13th game in a series without first playing the rest of them or at least knowing what the hell it's about? Idiots.

Means you like your hand held through a gaming experience. Linear games are a thing of the past.

Funny they say that because other Final Fantasy games are more open world and although they are linear in story, they give you a lot of exploration choices. That is what I like about past Final Fantasy games.

They dont need to care for the same reason why EA/activision/etc. keep bringing sequels to the same games year after year.....because they still make money!!!!

I'd say this game will let down for a lot of those people who are really looking forward to it...Its been hyped up and waited for, for way too long.

As for non-linearity making it dificult to tell a story, I'd agree somewhat. But its not impossible

Square doesn't make games. Square makes movies that you navigate with a game controller.

Re: Rat's comment.
No I think you're getting confused with Quantic Dream. Square makes games with (normally) at least 30-40 hours gameplay.

FFX was way too linear in its design for my tastes and this game goes even further down that road. TO be honest FFXIII looks like Bayonetta with a menu based battle system and more characters.

The linearity issue in ff games is something that is directly linked with Tetsuya Nomura's involvement. I think it is high time he started forcusing on KH and some of his own pet projects instead of turning the FF series into a action games.

As I prefer the exploration aspect of FF games, I am far more interested in FFXIV at this point.

The only good FF games had full out world maps with multiple sidequests. The player choose where to go next.

Final Fantasy 9 and below.

i'm conflicted...

at first i thought "good for you square"

then when i read the part about it being "difficult to tell a compelling story blah blah blah" that totally removed any good will about the subject.

i just don't accept people not doing something because it isn't easy...

up until final fantasy 9 it was good..... the rpg's i like now are fallout and mass effect. JRPG's are not like they used to be....star ocean till the end of time is much better than star ocean for ps3 and 360.

A story can be compelling and yet be told in an open world where the player chooses what to do and when. Isn't that how lots of western DnD-derivative games are?

It may be. I've only tried a handful of western rpgs and have never particularly enjoyed them (the only ones I even finished were the KOTOR games). Perhaps the openness IS a hindrance to the story telling, or maybe I just haven't met a western rpg with a story I liked. I do plan on trying the Mass Effect games if I ever get a 360, though.

I'm trying to remember how FFIX was so non-linear. It's been a long time and I only played it once, but it seems to me that pretty much all good rpgs are at least somewhat linear. Sure there are a few sidequests you can do now or later or skip entirely, but for the most part, the game still proceeds in a fairly straight line: you can wander around the world map, but most of the time you've really only got one choice for your next stop unless you want to backtrack (I do NOT want to backtrack!) or grind out levels (I REALLY don't want to grind!)

I have yet to see a "non-linear" game that really pulls it off: mostly it's just shuffling what order the story happens a bit (which sometimes works ok, and other times doesn't work well at all: did anybody else see Bastilla in the ending cutscene of kotor after they KILLED her?) I'll be interested to see if Heavy Rain makes it work.

So, while I wouldn't necessarily say that square is right (won't know until the game comes out), I can certainly see their point. There's always going to be some people who say that it was better before, but you get that with any medium (you should try checking out some old-timey movies: some of them will blow your mind, they're so good).

I have a friend who played XII and he thought the story was crap. Apparently it bears a lot of resemblance to Star Wars.
Typical eastern attitude thinking they tell better stories than the West.
All eastern stories have been shit and cliche forever now. Suck it up Square, you've lost your touch. No need to be a little bitch crying about the west because of it.

Its nasty... FF was only good till the 9... they are making "movie based" games, not games anymore. Its a shame.

Most of the games in the FF series ARE very linear in the beginning, even up to half way through. After that though, its pretty much up to you what happens next. Also open world RPGs CAN'T tell a good story. I've beaten the story of Oblivion several times. I couldn't tell you shit about what happened though. Open world just really doesn't let you get too involved. Either way, I decided I was buying this game the second they announced it so screw critics.
