FFXIII bosses: We don't listen to critics too much |
Listed in: PS3, Xbox 360 Tags: final fantasy xiii, Motomu Toriyama, Square Enix, Yoshinori Kitase

With Final Fantasy XIII's Western release less than a month away, early reviews for the game have already started to surface. Thing is, not everybody's happy about the game. Square Enix, however, doesn't care.
"We try not to listen to the critics too much. Most of the criticisms have come because the first half of the game is very linear," producer Yoshinori Kitase recently told gaming mag Xbox World 360. "But we've got a story to tell, and it's important the player can engage with the characters and the world they inhabit before letting them loose..."
Director Motomu Toriyama also chimed in, explaining away negative reactions as rooted in the west's exposure to open-world RPGs.
"We think many reviewers are looking at Final Fantasy XIII from a western point of view. When you look at most Western RPGs, they just dump you in a big open world, and let you do whatever you like... [It] becomes very difficult to tell a compelling story when you're given that much freedom," he explained.
Of the print reviews released so far, Game Informer's 9.25 score is the highest, with PSM3 Magazine's 70% score the lowest. Final Fantasy XIII comes out on March 9.

As for non-linearity making it dificult to tell a story, I'd agree somewhat. But its not impossible

No I think you're getting confused with Quantic Dream. Square makes games with (normally) at least 30-40 hours gameplay.

The linearity issue in ff games is something that is directly linked with Tetsuya Nomura's involvement. I think it is high time he started forcusing on KH and some of his own pet projects instead of turning the FF series into a action games.
As I prefer the exploration aspect of FF games, I am far more interested in FFXIV at this point.

at first i thought "good for you square"
then when i read the part about it being "difficult to tell a compelling story blah blah blah" that totally removed any good will about the subject.
i just don't accept people not doing something because it isn't easy...

I'm trying to remember how FFIX was so non-linear. It's been a long time and I only played it once, but it seems to me that pretty much all good rpgs are at least somewhat linear. Sure there are a few sidequests you can do now or later or skip entirely, but for the most part, the game still proceeds in a fairly straight line: you can wander around the world map, but most of the time you've really only got one choice for your next stop unless you want to backtrack (I do NOT want to backtrack!) or grind out levels (I REALLY don't want to grind!)
I have yet to see a "non-linear" game that really pulls it off: mostly it's just shuffling what order the story happens a bit (which sometimes works ok, and other times doesn't work well at all: did anybody else see Bastilla in the ending cutscene of kotor after they KILLED her?) I'll be interested to see if Heavy Rain makes it work.
So, while I wouldn't necessarily say that square is right (won't know until the game comes out), I can certainly see their point. There's always going to be some people who say that it was better before, but you get that with any medium (you should try checking out some old-timey movies: some of them will blow your mind, they're so good).

Typical eastern attitude thinking they tell better stories than the West.
All eastern stories have been shit and cliche forever now. Suck it up Square, you've lost your touch. No need to be a little bitch crying about the west because of it.
