1. Features removed from NGP to keep price down
2. Lesson learned from the PS3

As it is, Sony's Next Generation Portable is already a powerful piece of hardware. It's so feature-dense, in fact, that one wonders how Sony will put a price tag on the device. According Sony's Shuhei Yoshida, the NGP could have had more functions packed into it, but they had to be dropped to keep the portable affordable.

"I can't talk about a definitive price at this stage," Yoshida said. "But since the very beginning we had a target in mind. So, when considering various features, we always had our price range in mind."

This price remains elusive, but Sony has stated that they'll make the announcement when consumers would think it makes sense.

my opinion
it wasnt a mistake

also the ps3 is now much cheaper than a 360, to get up to standards

ie wifi, online, rechargeable controllers

Let's not compare PS3 to X360, that'd start a stupid fanboy war, no one wants that.

I agree. I was fine with the ps3's price at the time. I considered it a matter of you get what you pay for and the 360 was a cheaper piece of equipment in price and quality (regardless of what you think of the quality of games, you can't ignore the 360's >50% console failure rate). (note: I'm not a Sony fanboy--I hate them now and will never buy another Sony product, but that doesn't change the fact that I don't think the ps3 price was a mistake at the time).

As for the NGP's (lame name) price, I have no idea what it's going to be, but I'm pretty darn sure it's going to cost more than the 3ds and it's going to have trouble moving units. Sony has lost much of the goodwill they had with their fanbase, so it's mostly going to be the die-hard fans, the ones who don't mind Sony's utter lack of regard for their customers, and the tech geeks who have to have the most hi-tech gadgets who buy it, and I don't think there's enough of those types to be successful with a handheld. I'm predicting it's going to be a flop unless the price is surprisingly low.

Okay Sony you're already asking for it.

The hackers will hack it in no time when they get the NGP on their hands.

It'd be funny if Geohot would be the one to hack NGP too. :D

I will not be buying the NGP.

lol, I don't care about the price of NGP, as long as I can masturbate and watch porno on it without my grandma spotting me, it's all fine. Btw, to all the noobs who are poor and can't afford this piece of shit, go suck a cock.

Sony's already on the back foot with this thing simply because it's Sony running it. You just know they gonna f*ck something up with it so they can't afford to start stripping features off, i mean they might say they learned that more technology doesn't automatically mean more sales, but being Sony running it they need more technology, less cost and fire all the people that made all the major decisions the last 5 years.

So they can't sell the NGP for the same price as the PSP? The PSP was already considered to be overpriced at launch.... geez.... you really wonder if they really did learn their lessons from it?

That's probably true, one of the biggest problems with Psp for me is i have no reason to take it anywhere, it's too big to just keep in my pocket and there's f*ck all games being made for it, but at least with GPS you have more reason to have it with you, which means more reason to buy games and spend money on it. But being Sony they'll most likely remove it anyway simply because they always manage to do the wrong thing.

They are NOT taking away features at this point, they were talking about features they had plans for but decided against because of cost. Everything we have seen it still will have including the analogs

Yeah... "at this point"

Give them time, then they'll realize that it shouldn't play PS1 games anymore since they could still end up selling that cute little CD player.

Hell I would sell most of my stuff and ps2 to buy a ps3. But now the ngp has been announced and changed my mind to buy that instead! (I lost my psp a few weeks ago  ) They could make two versions of the ngp:
All Features - Pricier
Less Features - Cheaper

and everyone is happy :-)

Why must people on this site be so confrontational and, frankly, stupid?
Its clear he means during the development stage. Although I'm not sure what else this thing could have had on it.
Either way... its not like he means that they read people's responses, got scared because people were moaning about the price and then lopped off 2 buttons and an analogue stick. :o

Well, whatever the case is NGP will be outdated by the time it is available to the general public, as nVidia already announced their Kal-El a Quad-Core Mobile Processor. Then you have Wayne (2012), Logan(2013), Stark (2014). I wonder if Sony can keep up with that. Competition is gearing up for the worse and things are changing drastically nowadays especially with mobile products. I hope Sony keeps up otherwise they will be gone before you know it.

Everytime I read a story from Sony it sounds more and more like they think their consumers are cows who need to be milked for money. Its like they're always trying to piss people off instead of trying to please their fanbase. Maybe that's why Microsoft and the Xbox 360 kicked their butts for the last 5 years. Yeah we know Microsoft is an american company and it's success hurts you but get over it Sony.
