As it is, Sony's Next Generation Portable is already a powerful piece of hardware. It's so feature-dense, in fact, that one wonders how Sony will put a price tag on the device. According Sony's Shuhei Yoshida, the NGP could have had more functions packed into it, but they had to be dropped to keep the portable affordable.

"I can't talk about a definitive price at this stage," Yoshida said. "But since the very beginning we had a target in mind. So, when considering various features, we always had our price range in mind."
This price remains elusive, but Sony has stated that they'll make the announcement when consumers would think it makes sense.

As for the NGP's (lame name) price, I have no idea what it's going to be, but I'm pretty darn sure it's going to cost more than the 3ds and it's going to have trouble moving units. Sony has lost much of the goodwill they had with their fanbase, so it's mostly going to be the die-hard fans, the ones who don't mind Sony's utter lack of regard for their customers, and the tech geeks who have to have the most hi-tech gadgets who buy it, and I don't think there's enough of those types to be successful with a handheld. I'm predicting it's going to be a flop unless the price is surprisingly low.

The hackers will hack it in no time when they get the NGP on their hands.
It'd be funny if Geohot would be the one to hack NGP too.

Give them time, then they'll realize that it shouldn't play PS1 games anymore since they could still end up selling that cute little CD player.

Its clear he means during the development stage. Although I'm not sure what else this thing could have had on it.
Either way... its not like he means that they read people's responses, got scared because people were moaning about the price and then lopped off 2 buttons and an analogue stick.
