FBI: console theft up 285% in the last three years

Christmas is just a little over a week away and with all those deals popping up, the buying just doesn't stop. Word of warning, though. You're not the only one with gadgets on your Christmas wishlist - thieves and burglars are on the prowl as well. According to the FBI, console theft over the last three years has shot up 285%.

"Local and state police officers routinely see a spike in these type of crimes during the holiday season," says FBI special agent Jason Pack. "Stolen electronics are easily sold on the street for quick cash." This is precisely the reason that despite the falling overall theft rate, gaming systems and other electronic devices are far from pilfer-proof.

"Criminals are rational. They steal things that have high value, are easily transportable and easily sold," says University of Massachusetts-Lowell criminologist Larry J. Siegel. "The most expensive thing in my house is my refrigerator, but nobody is trying to steal my refrigerator."

So in 2007 Wii's were being stolen but not X360's as they were always with Microsoft. Then in 2008, they fixed the RROD issue so it blew up after some time, so it was with owners for sometime, so they got stolen. Then in 2009, PS3 Slim was released so it became easier to carry and steal. PS3 Phat is tooooo big to steal and run with.

I agree, this new system is totally bogus. I still can't get it to work with IE8 at all!!! WTF QJ?

Do they bother to mention WHICH consoles are stolen? Pre-Retail or Post-Retail?

Who's going to buy a used 360 out of a trunk? Hello, it's stolen!!! Probably has owner info on it.

I just want to chip in and say i also hate this new comment system, mainly because i can't login on my phone, when i try using Opera or Ucweb i hit the login button then it just takes me to the pc gaming section and i'm not logged in, i can login with the built in N95 browser but the pages are too big and get low memory message, can someone get this sorted.

there is already such a lock its called a kensington lock the 360 has a slot for one as do most lcd tv's how ever the ps3 (phat at least) does not have a slot for a kensington lock

The system before was type and press a button and you've commented. Now its type, press send, then press it again, and then click go back to article and also all of the formatting in the comments are gone. And also i liked the smiley system was nice.

You'd get a lot of excercise trying to steal a 60gb ps3, they weigh so much.
