Sony are skipping their UMD format entirely for the upcoming Next Generation Portable. Instead, they're going with another proprietary game delivery system that utilizes specifically made flash media cards.

ngp-1

That's not to say NGP owners won't have a chance to play some of its predecessor's classic games, however, as Gigazine found out.

One avenue of approach, of course, is through Sony's online game download service. The problem is that most PSP games remain UMD-only. To that end, Sony are still in deep negotiations with developers and publishers to release key titles on the PlayStation Store.

Oh look, something Sony did in an attempt to lock people out and keep things proprietary comes back to bite them in the butt.

Is anybody else completely unsurprised?

Why do people still keep on complaining about backwards compatibility? I remember having a Game Boy Color, then years later the DS came out, and remember I couldn't play GBC on the DS, I just told myself to deal with it, if I want to play a game, i'll play it on the system it was made for at it's time of release?

Probably because a lot of people will finance the new hardware by selling their old systems but would still like to play a few favourites.

Sony needs to stop playing with their customers and just give us a way of just either sending or going to a sony store and giving them back any game umd we have and just give us a credit to download the game online to the psp ngp or the psp go. THis will make everybody happy and not mad at the fact that they want to buy the new system but lose the option of playing their old game that they official bought and paid

See, here's the thing though... you aren't losing the ability to play the PSP just because you are buying the NGP; no one is making you sell or trade the older system, and if you still have games you want to play on it, keep it. Seems like basic common sense to me...

Yeah but I only want one portable system to do it all. There needs to be an end to this mad cycle. It would show a lot of honor from Sony if they would help the consumer make that next step without sacrifice. Even at PSP 10, they could allow these games to still play. These systems get so powerful that emulation of past systems hardly take up resources. The same thing with the PS3 for PS2 games. There is no excuse that they would not allow backwards compatibility. It is not much of a "play-station" if you can not play content that is the PlayStation brand, period.

do people actually do that: take more than one game with them at a time? i can see for long trips, but seriously, like everyday traveling? is your attention span really that short that you can't just play one game? i baffled and would like an honest answer as to why it is so important that a handheld MUST have backwards compatibility.

if the answer is to sell your old handheld to help fund the newer handheld, i have a suggestion: SAVE. honestly, we have like a year till this comes out.

Why are people still going on about finding a way to copy their UMD's or returning them for a digital replacement or whatever? It is not Ever Ever Ever Ever going to happen, and for once it's not Sony's fault we not getting what we want. There's just too much legal s*it to deal with developers who went bust or just don't want a digital copy. So everyone wanting this just grab a needle and etch this simple word into your pupils... NO!

this is kinda bullshit for people how supported the psp from the very beginning like me and have alot of UMDS. i dont want to have to carry around 3 different handhelds. its why i didnt get a pspgo. if sony was smart and actually cared about there older system and there customers then they would find a way for umds to be played

you mean were going to buy a pspgo but didn't want to because you didnt want to carry around multiple handhelds... because your psp doesn't already play the same games as a pspgo..????

I bet the NGP uses some obscure memory format nobody uses, like the Memory Stick Micro.
