Earlier this month, one of the most recognizable video game development studios in the UK closed its doors for the final time. After a time of being in dire straits and the possibility of being sold off by its parent company Activision, the Liverpool-based studio Bizarre Creations was finally shut down.
The end had been coming for a while. Activision had apparently been trying to decide for some time that Bizarre either be shut down or sold off. The latter proved to be a futile undertaking, as Activision confirmed in January that efforts to find a suitable buyer for the ailing development studio were unsuccessful.
Activision Worldwide Stuios' chief operating officer Coddy Johnson explained at the time, "I want to be clear, our first choice was to try and keep this group together and find a buyer for the studio. This decision comes after a few months of exhausted examination of a number of different options across the board."
Bizarre, which was acquired by publishing giant Activision in 2007 after the studio cut its ties with Microsoft, was best known for creating games in the racing genre. Their first racing game, Formula 1 for the original PlayStation, also turned out to be their first big hit when it went on to become the best selling game in Europe in 1996.
In the years that followed, Bizarre further solidified their mastery of the racing genre with the release of the Project Gotham Racing series. The studio also kept in touch with its shooter roots with critically acclaimed releases like the Geometry Wars games.
Most recently, Bizarre released their own take on the James Bond franchise, James Bond 007: Blood Stone, and a new racing game called Blur. The studio had high hopes for the latter. They set out to turn it into the next big racing franchise, but even though the game received critical praise it didn't exactly make a big splash on the sales charts.
Nevertheless, Bizarre believed that the game's multiplayer would give it the longevity it needs. Its sales performance just didn't prove enough to meet Activision's expectations, however, and inevtiably became one of the reasons why the studio was shut down. Activision made sure to point out during the announcement of Bizarre's closure that one of the reasons behind it was that "although we made a substantial investment in creating a new IP, Blur, it did not find a commercial audience."

Anyway, I thought Blur was amazing.. I'm pretty upset they became an Activision casualty.
