EVE Online makes launch in China, sets new MMO world record

If this is not a glorious start for CCP Games' space MMO in China, then I don't know what is. The Icelandic developer today announced that the start of EVE Online's Chinese Open Beta set a new world record for the number of players online simultaneously in the same game world. Just hours after opening, 30,000 users logged into the game server, while a total of 200,000 registered for the Open Beta.
CCP's CEO Hilmar Veigar Pétursson joked: “It was quite amazing to see the population of EVE China exceed the population of Iceland in the second day of open Beta testing".

The licensing partner in China is Optic Communications, an online technology company who are now running the localized cluster of EVE Online. It is separated from the US/European cluster due to the unique operating environment in China and different demands. To cope with the extreme growth of EVE China and the Asian MMO market in general, CCP has opened an Asian branch. “We believe that our unique ‘one world’ design, great flexibility in character advancement, and social game play are a perfect fit for the highly dedicated and knowledgeable Chinese player base.”, said Managing Director of CCP Asia Pierre Emilsson.

EVE Online continues to be successful with Western audiences as well. CCP continues to regularly introduce major content patches and new features for thousands of players logging into EVE every day. The game had only recently set the MMO record of "most players online simultaneously" itself, with 25,941 players online on the Western cluster in March.
