EA Sports to charge used game customers $10 for online capabilities |
Listed in: PS3, MMORPG, Xbox 360, PC Gaming Tags:
In these tough economic times where it's becoming harder to pay for what people want, we understand that used games might be the way for some people to enjoy gaming. Apparently, Electronic Arts doesn't understand - they plan to charge you $10 if you want online capabilities to be unlocked on your used game.

Yes, you heard right. The way it works is that your EA Sports game is shipped with a redeemable code. That code contains the unlock for online play and a few bonus things they threw in there. It's not like entering long codes isn't annoying enough, but for online play? Come on EA! If you're one of the people that bought the used game you're given a 7 day grace period to try out the game online with the bonus content but then you'll have to pony up for it.
From the EA FAQ:
"In order to continue to enhance the online experiences that are attracting nearly five million connected game sessions a day, again, we think it’s fair to get paid for the services we provide and to reserve these online services for people who pay EA to access them."
Seriously? EA has had multiple high volume games with online capabilities and they haven't seemed to stop making money or feel the bite from all the gamers. I think that they're starting to forget that the reason they're successful is because we're the ones buying the games!
The first game to ship with the Online Pass "feature" is Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 11. I just honestly hope that other companies won't jump on this bandwagon, because it really does seem like something that would convince me to buy another game.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of used games, but every now and then I'll trade in games that I'll never play again. EA is basically trying to kill the used games industry, which essentially diminishes the value of the games. A game like MGS4 that I'll play over and over is fine, but with an EA sports title, where the next one will be out in just a year, becomes a coaster pretty quickly if you can't sell it.
Seems to me that's why EA in particular is doing this. They keep releasing essentially the same games with a few feature upgrades here and there and try to get people to pay full price each time. There's probably a lot of people who just buy last year's game used, and now EA want's to put the kibosh on that.
When will these companies learn that attacking your customer base is NOT a good idea?

If you don't have an internet connection to register the code, then you wouldn't have been able to play on-line anyway.

55 dollars for a used game, but you need to pay 10 dollars for full capability
65 used vs 60 new?
Kinda blows the whole concept of used game is less money out of the water, dontcha think?

Maybe they are just so out of touch that they don't realize a lot of the gamer community pays attention to who publishes and makes the games, and know who pats their fans on the back versus those that try to screw us while they're back there. FFFFUUUUU, EA.

Bad stupid move, keep games like they are supposed to be. If you want more money for used games, contact places that sell used games and set up a contract.

Is it just me or is the whole game industry getting kinda' nasty? Overpriced dlc that's up on launch day (and could've been included on the disc and some of it IS on the disc), paid dlc unlock codes ($3 or whatever it was to unlock the weapons and stuff in Soul Calibur 4), features being taken from systems two years after we bought them (ps3 linux), and now they're trying to kill the used game industry by making our used games worthless.
I think I've bought my last gaming console--this stuff is just getting ridiculous.

EXAMPLE:
I want to play a NBA game and kick ass online, 2K10 and Live 2010 both have a Michael Jordan DLC for $5. Each game is going for $25 used. Should I pay $40 to play Live 2010 online or pay $30 to play 2k10 online?

Problem here is now they're cutting "essential" content from the game unless you buy it new. This, ladies and gentlemen, is bullshit. It's no problem for those who buy new, but for those who don't, well, looks like they're paying 5 bucks more for their game than everyone else is.
This isn't EA trying to rip you off, this is EA trying to kill the used game market, or at the least, Gamestop's hold over it.
Does this mean that Gamestop bends over the customer buy charging 5 dollars less, forcing you, in the end, to pay 5 dollars more than a new copy? Or does Gamestop lower the price of a few select used games by 10 dollars so that the customer doesn't get screwed?
Personally, I'd like to see if this does lead to less used game sales, and then in turn, see if it also leads to less DLC being bought.

somehow EA can be excused for this one they're planning now, since they don't force people to buy used games instead of new. but that is ok as long as they produce that game as new. because, for example, if 5 years from now there would be no Spore, than it would be unfair to force the buyer to also buy the online interaction for the used disc just because the option to buy it new was not available anymore.

15 years ago I remember renting games for my SNES, and look at Nintendo now; 15 years later they're still going strong as ever.
If it wasn't for the few extremely rare gems that crop up in EA's production lines, the gaming community would run them to the ground with all their crappy games.
