Back in the old days, you trained your custom fighter in various mini-game exercises to boost his attributes. You only get a few every now and then, so you really had to make them count as you move your way up in your career. In Fight Night Champion, EA Sports improves that system several notches up.

After you create your fighter, you'll have the option of joining an Online Gym. You can create your own or a join an existing one through your system's online service. You and your friends can put up your own stable, or you can join a high-ranked gym for the challenge prestige of it.

It's important to decide on the Online Gym because there's an entire mode devoted to taking on your gym mates. You'll be set in matchups in a season, then if you do well enough, you'll qualify for your gym's tournament, maybe even take that belt home. Of course, you can also challenge fighters from other gyms.
