Do you enjoy microtransactions?  EA thinks you do, and they are planning to make them an even bigger part of their titles in the future.

Blake Jorgensen, CFO of Electronic Arts, recently spoke favorably about microtransactions at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference.  Here’s some of what he had to say: “We are building into all of our games the ability to pay for things along the way; to get to a higher level, to buy a new characters; to buy a truck or gun or whatever it might be.  And consumers are enjoying and embracing that way of business.”

Jorgensen stressed that the proper technology must be in place for microtransactions to work, and that EA has taken the proper steps to ensure this by using the company’s in-house resources and thanks to the efforts of CTO Rajat Taneja.  “We've got to have a very strong backend to make sure…if you're doing microtransactions, and you're processing credit cards for every one of those microtransactions, you'll get eaten alive. And so Rajat's team has built an amazing backend to manage that and manage that much more profitably. We've outsourced a lot of that stuff historically; we're bringing that all in-house now,” he added.

What’s your opinion of microtransactions?  Good or bad?

Nobody in the fucking world like microtransactio ns. Not a single person I know. EA sucks as always and I will continue to pirate all of its games due to it's business model. If only it would abandon shitty origin and move to steam like everybody else then maybe I will overlook their evil souls and buy some of their games. But look at how they're about to ruin command and conquer generals by making it a free to play game. Nobody like FTP games either. They suck.

I like microtransactio ns when done right. World of Warcraft has a great model - you can buy stuff you want, but not stuff you need. Pets, mounts, accessories but nothing that actually matters.
