It seems the gaming world has really come of age. The Championship Gaming Invitational airs on DirecTV Channel 101 on September 8, 9, and 10. The games included in the first tournament are Battlefield 2, Counterstrike 1.6, Halo 2, Project Gotham Racing and Dead or Alive 4. This is the onset of regular broadcasts of videogaming tournaments, something akin to what the South Koreans have been enjoying for years. DirecTV airs the initial broadcasts of the exhibiton invitational this weekend, and we hope you get a chance to watch this videogame tourneys. There's nothing but positive outlook towards this, as gamers believe this must be the first step to escalating videogames to the status of the X-Games and poker. Action games and high-stakes card games have received quite a lot of TV exposure (Poker Tour, anyone?) but videogame tournaments are lagging behind. What DirecTV does is something all videogamers are looking forward to in the future.
Let's take a hint on what the CGS has to say: "The Championship Gaming Series will launch as a league starting 2007; however, in 2006, we will broadcast 3 television events: Championship Gaming Invitational, the Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL) Winter Finals and an event that will be announced shortly."
