Deep Silver knew perfectly well that the market is already saturated with zombie games, so they decided to go about things differently for Dead Island. They wanted it to be "more real, more visceral."

“Deep Silver were really keen to create something different, something that would really stand out and when they put forward the initial idea for the ‘reverse’ sequence I saw the seed of something great there.” said Axis owner and director Stuart Aitken, who was at the helm of creating the trailer along with producer Andrew Pearce.

Aitken explained further that a zombie apocalypse isn't just about the horror and brutality of the undead, that's why they aimed for the emotional thread that isn't often seen in zombie games. This emotion became the key to the trailer's success.

i think deep silver's up to the task of getting a great game done, but i'm not sure if they can tug on heartstrings though

Oh noze... the kid was bit and turned into a zombie... that hasn't been done to death (ever since and including the original Night of the Living Dead).

I don't get why people are raving about this trailer. It's not using the game engine, and it's just a senseless zombie attach scene that's played in reverse and slow motion because otherwise you would realize there's not really anything interesting to see here.
