David Hayter on why movie-based games suck |

While there are games like GoldenEye that stand out as classics despite being a tie-in for a movie, most other games under that category are pretty much in the realm of the damned. David Hayter, better known as the voice of Solid Snake, shares his take on how that happens.

"I work on very expensive movies, [so] I’m pretty intimately involved with the process," he said. "What happens is, nobody wants to pull the trigger [on a big-budget movie] because once you do it becomes a freight train rolling, there is no way to stop it. Once you pull the trigger on $100+ million, that’s a train you don’t want leaving the station unless you’re absolutely sure."
"So it takes a long time for people to agree that the movie is going forward and once it does, it just goes. And the filmmakers start spending money before the studio gets cold feet. So they drag their feet and drag their feet and drag their feet, and then they give the green light and suddenly you’re going, you have to be shooting this summer."
The effect? Developers end up having to rush to meet the deadlines, leaving a very compromised game to hit the stores. There are, however, cases like Iron Man 2. "With something like ‘Iron Man 2,’ from the opening weekend of [the first] ‘Iron Man’ you know you’re making ‘Iron Man 2.’ So theoretically, the video game adaptation should be great. But that’s really the only situation where you’re going to get enough advance time and enough advance money to do a proper video game adaptation."
Still, the Iron Man 2 game received poor reviews and became the season's example of a flop movie-game.

I understand the need for ads, but I hope QJ is getting boatloads of money for those stupid auto-playing video ads.
Oh, and whenever I try to look at someone's profile or edit mine, it freezes my entire browser (Firefox.. it does it on IE too, both fully updated) .. it stops at load.exeter.com or something.

a lot of Terminator salvation for instance was running around, not really fighting... How many people are gonna want to run around over fight? It also leads to a lot of people accepting from the start its gonna suck!
there are many other examples, but most times you have a movie that for 1 reason or another will not be fun to play but cool to watch, and vice versa, take Golden eye... I dont see anyone claiming the campaign (i dont even remember if it had one... But i think it did) its always about the multiplayer

Well besides most movies suck so making a game out of a turd = an interactive turd.
But movies are big big business.
Like oil.
They allegedly spent 10 mil acquiring the rights for the 2600 ET title.
And that was 1982 bucks!
Lawyer ball developers like activision probably spend 10-20X the money on acquiring the property rights and advertising then they do on actual coding and development.
Actually creating the game must be so secondary after all the money invested in licensing and product placement that its probably considered a superfluous overhead to be reigned in and kept to a minimum
They're not selling you a videogame in the case of movie tie ins, they're selling you a brand name.
Thats one way to make a sure buck because most people are stupid enough to keep buying them.

And I agree that out of the 3 ROTK was the best one and is more playable today than the first two.
I was also surprised by how playable treasure planet was on the PSX. I haven't played the PS2 version.
Monsters incorporated on PSX was alright except for the camera, which was always a problem for even the best 3D platformers.
Small soldiers on PSX was pretty fun.
People liked the die hard trilogy games, but I didn't play them so I cant vouch for it.
Apocalypse on PSX was fun at the time.
The godfather on PS2 was a sometimes iffy but pretty good GTA rip off.
And Lego star wars was of course actually better than the prequel trilogy.
Its not impossible to make a movie based game, its just unusual because its so much easier and cost effective to throw something together and stick the name on it.
